Japan is a country and a people who have a deep mythology. Their myths go back a lot longer than their histories do, although they often cross paths. Read on to found out about Japan and it's rich mythology.

Japan

Today Japan is on the forefront of new technology, and as a nation have played apart in some of histories great events. They have there own style and although they are very close to the economic giant China, they have managed to keep their own identity. The Japanese have a very rich history, which goes so far back it becomes myth. What is for sure, is that the first known people to live in Japan were a people named the Ainu.

Japanease creation myth

These ancient peoples believed that in the beginning there was nothing at all in the earth, but a swampy liquid of water and earth. It was believed that nothing lived within these swamps. That was until the Ainu creator god Kamui, sent a water Wagtail to the swamps. With a flutter of the Wagtails wings and tail, from the water came islands. Once Kamui had established his land, he next wanted to create something to live their. With this Kamui created people and animals.

It is thought that in the second and first centuries BC, people from Asia found and inhabited Japan. With them came Shinto, a nature religion. Shinto was very different to Japans original religion, changing Japans ideas and ideologies. Shinto creation myth has it, that their was nothing of the world in the beginning but oceans and chaos. This slowly turned into the heavens above and the light, and earth the heavy down below.

Nature worship is seen in many different parts of the world, it exists today in many different forms and it's history goes back along way. In the Shinto nature religion, their priest would make offerings to the different spirits of nature. They believed that all amazing things in nature have there own spirits residing within.

Izanami and Izanagi

The first god talked of is thought to have grown between earth and heaven like a reed shoot. The first male and female gods are Izanami and Izanagi. These two god like people are said to have stood on a rainbow, Izanagi with his spear. With it he steered up the oceans, until an island was formed. He an Izanami then left behind heaven to live on their island. Apparently Japan was formed says Shinto myth, when Izanami had eight children who themselves became islands.

These two Izanami and Izanagi went on to have many more children, these children molded and lived in every part of earth's nature. So such things as the sea, the winds, rivers and mountains were all sacred to Shinto theology of the day. As found in many other ancient mythologies and religions from all over the world. The sun god is ruler of the universe, only this time in Shinto myth it is the sun goddess named Amaterasu. Interestingly she was created from Izanagi's left eye.

I do so wish that everyone would recognise myth for what it is and not try to pretend that it is the truth.

I am, of course, referring to the Biblical Creationists who only succeed in making themselves look ridiculous.

whew; I am amazed, not only by the article but also by John's response to this. I am a born again in the spirit, Christian. I am sure a lot has been written about 'New Birth.'

Why is Bets amazed by my comment?

The point I was making is that we have an example here of a creation myth, of which there must be a huge number - every primitive society around the world had its own myth.

However, the Jewish creation myth - as given in the Book of Genesis - must, according to many people, be given special special attention and accepted as truth rather than myth.

This is what I find amazing!

Christianity was created with a purpose in mind, and it has served it's purpose very well. But their are to many cracks for it to not sink. Many Christian churches around the world are having to change their positions on certain things, in order to keep up with science and history. Were not supposed to read it literally anymore but rather symbolically, thats because litrally it makes no sense and is a contradiction to itself.
