How the fictional character Jay Gatsby won friends and influenced people to the top

His Smile

In The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, the main character Nick indirectly characterizes Gatsby as a remarkable salesman, a people person able to be genuinely interested in people and give them a feeling of being liked. In a book I recently read, How to Win Friends and Influence People, the author Dale Carnegie discusses humanity’s universal desire to be liked and the importance of being truly interested in people in order to befriend and influence them. According to Nick, Gatsby’s smile “understood you as far as you wanted to be understood” and “believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself” (48). Gatsby’s personality embodied Carnegie’s model of an influencer. His unique salesmanship was probably instrumental in his upward mobility into the ranks of the newly rich. Gatsby’s smile was “one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life” (48). It belonged to a rare breed of enchanting salesmen with the ability to sell snow to Eskimos. Nick’s account of Gatsby portrays his remarkable ability to enchant onlookers, his likely road to riches, and how we can influence people as well.
