What happened this past week in America is nothing out of the ordinary. The stories below are hardly unique. Similar stories unfold constantly in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Another white cop kills an unarmed black man

On Monday, December 1, 2014, a white police officer in Phoenix, Arizona came upon a black man, Rumain Brisbon, in the process of removing some things he suspected were drugs from the rear of his SUV. The officer told Brisbon to show his hands, and when he failed to do so the cop pulled his gun. Brisbon then ran toward his apartment, and because the officer "feared" he had a gun in his pocket, he shot Brisbon twice. Brisbon died instantly, on his front porch.

The "bulge" in Brisbon's pocket, which the officer thought was a weapon, was a legally prescribed bottle of oxycodone pills. The suspected "drugs" Brisbon was carrying was fast food he was in the process of delivering to his children. As Brisbon lay dying, french fries littered the porch.

The Phoenix Police Department is refusing to release the name of the white officer who killed Rumain Brisbon. The dead man was 33 years old.

Kill all the gays

Pastor Charles Worley is the presiding minister at Maiden, North Carolina's Providence Road Baptist Church. On Sunday, November 30, 2014, he told his congregation that lesbians and "queers" should all be arrested, imprisoned in camps with electrified fencing, and left to die.

Worley reasons that placing all LGBT people in camps and letting them die will eventually stamp out homosexuality because gays "don't reproduce." This suggests, of course, that only gays reproduce gays. Huh?

Worley makes no apologies for his sermon: "We offer NO apologies in believing the King James Version of the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. If you live in this area or are ever passing through, I invite you to come visit with us at Providence Road Baptist Church."

Chicago police use new technology to spy on demonstrators

According to activists who have been marching in Chicago this week to protest the murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, the city's police department has been employing so-called "stingray" technology to intercept and listen in on their cell phone conversations. The technology imposes a "wall" between the user's phone and their provider, which forces phones int he immediate area to send the data to the police instead of the nearest cell tower.

Activists have posted photographs on-line of a vehicle with markings that identify it as a Chicago emergency management vehicle (see photo above) with what appears to be radar on top. The vehicle follows protesters and some have reported when the vehicle is close by their phones fail to work properly. According to the activists, the video below provides proof that the police are using the stingray technology to spy on the protesters' phone conversations.

Death threats

In Wichita, Kansas, the Metropolitan Community Church ministers to a congregation that includes members of the gay and lesbian community. The Reverend Jackie Carter, the church's pastor, has reported this week that the church has been receiving at least a phone call a day threatening to kill her or to commit acts of violence against her congregation. After performing a wedding ceremony for 15 same-sex couples at the Sedgwick County Courthouse on November 20, 2014, the threats increased markedly.

"Monday was probably the most scary time for me,"
said Carter. "The phone rang and I went to answer the phone and it was just somebody heavy breathing on it. Then somebody rang the doorbell and then somebody started throwing rocks at the windows."

Callers sometimes tell her "to repent so I don't have to suffer inhumane death at the hands of Satan." Before last month's group wedding, two callers threatened to chop off her head and put it on a stake.

Ohio cuts off woman's benefits as she lies in a coma

While Kimberly Thompson was bedridden in a hospital, recovering from an infection that was untreated after surgery, she received a letter from the county telling her she was no longer eligible to receive government assistance. Shocked, she said "They basically cut me off of benefits for not reporting that I was in a coma."

Kimberly had worked for many years packing boxes in Columbus warehouses for $10 to $12 an hour, but when she underwent a hysterectomy last May, she was no longer able to lift heavy loads. Unable to work, she applied for welfare and food stamps, while she enrolled in a computer repair job training program. A month later, howeever, her infection worsened and her organs began shutting down. Over the next month she lay in a medically-induced coma.
When she woke up she learned that her cash assistance and food stamp benefits - over 700 dollars total - had been terminated.

Ohio, with a Republican controlled legislature and a Republican governor, has been busy slashing the state's social safety net over the past two years. Advocates for the poor in Ohio say that the state's imposition of strict work requirements on state welfare and food stamp recipients has resulted in thousands of families losing aid, and that Kimberly Thompson's situation is not at all uncommon.

Just another typical week in America.

Things are getting overboard in the land of total freedom - maybe the pendulum is swinging to the other extreme. Not a good sign for an inclusive society, Steve - siva

Steve, when I read this I can't help but think it is a total train wreck! A mess that's been created by the powers that be. I wonder how it will end?

It has been a wild week in America, which is typical! I pray that things get better soon! These shooting incidents do not make America the greatest country in the world, which it was meant to be!
Congrats on your star page, Steve! Greatly deserved!

It is becoming an unfriendly place to exist. I think that I will come to Europe. Maybe Italy, I love Italian food anyway.

Europe seems like a more sane place than America right now, but the UK may be going in America's direction - spying on their people, etc. At least they don't have all the killings because their cops, for the most part, don't carry guns.

Cruel indeed, the way the police is targeting Blacks and possibly other minorities. The South is returning to its old repressive ways?

We are moving closer every day to a completely totalitarian state.

Good news like always from America. Sometimes when one begins to think "What could be worse than this", one begins to see America. I may be wrong of course.
