Keeping the Peace…The Philosophy of a Stroke

This is a poem of how my wife must have felt watching me after my stroke. Watching as I re-learned how to write, and use numbers, and how she must dread all the things I have lost.

Keeping the Peace…The Philosophy of a Stroke

Keeping the Peace…The Philosophy of a Stroke

He had not meant
to put up his tools just yet…He thought.
He was searching for something in the sunshine,
something warm, and smooth, and real,

but even this
he had forgotten, or lost.

By Desire Alone

Was it by desire alone,
she wonders?
That his skin longed
to feel the cold steel,

that he reached
for the dropped forged hammer,
the saw and the nail.

This Was For Love

No…No
this was for love, she thought
and out of love for her and the children,
out of love of work and labor.
The scarring of his hands,
his knuckles torn,
his knees worn,
his empty mind alone in its shell, but

Through the Windows

not to see her through the windows,
watching.

Not to pass through the shadows
of night alone,
but to feel her with him,
like something warm and smooth,
like something real.

Somewhere

Somewhere out back,
Somewhere out by the old west ditch
where the fence hangs low,
a seed, one little seed
fell into an empty hole.

Sticky Leaves

In a few months a few sticky leaves
pop up in the morning sunshine
and soon enough a few more begin to show
and there it grows
up, and up, and up it goes

until the magpies nest in the branches
and squirrels in the holes below.

No One Remembers

And no one remembers
when the tree wasn’t there…No one,

and now he comes
with his saw-toothed wares,
a grandson grown gray in the evening sun,
searching for something in the sun,
something warm and smooth, and real,
but even this he has forgotten
and as she watches from the window
with teary eyes
and she knows.

I have been writing since the beginning of time it seems, not because I want to write, but because I have too. My favorite form of writing is poetry, all kinds and types of poetry.

I guess we are all little seeds that need to fall into an empty hole.

I hope there will always be enough empty holes around for us to keep falling in though.

Keep your own seed growing Utah. It's still a beautiful bush, with so many flowers on it, that you share intimately with us all.

I continue to be impressed by your photos, Utah. Your "something in the sunshine" photo with its incredible starburst left me breathless.
