Knowledge, Attitude and Teamwork – Elusive Dream Mix!

Many are unhappy at workplaces due to negative attitude of few who spread doom and gloom around them. The majority should assert so that they do not have to put up with such obnoxious elements that impact the general workplace.

Slip between Cup and Lip

Every day is not the same especially at the work place; after all, we are human! We watch our steps till the ice is broken and do not know what is in store. Some days do seem longer and we have to squeeze blood out of stone to find a semblance of sense and balance. One bad apple is enough to spoil the peace and make others scurry for cover. Colleagues, sometimes, prove a handful prone to unpredictable reactions and willful hurts. They take it out on others to get even whatever be their issues. If only we work in a place where knowledge, attitude and team work are a dream mix! Then we have a foretaste of heaven while still alive here, whew! But there is the eternal slip between the cup and the lip! And that is the way human mind has worked from time immemorial!

Can we move towards a better state of being and living? Why not, as who does not want to have a taste of a dream future? But what and who stand in the way? It is simple – individually we know what we want but collectively we refuse to coexist or rather a bad apple spoils the lot! The awareness is always ever present but we allow misery to take over. That is a fact of life we have to overcome to find semblance of peace within family, workplace, countries and the world itself!

Basics to Work Life

Knowledge: During our entire life we imbibe knowledge but hardly use much of what we learn. The essence of knowledge is wisdom but we are too absorbed with what we see to pause and reflect. We are ever rushing from point A to B and repeat the same mistakes without even realizing them. Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. But we do it all the time especially with our near and dear ones taking them for granted. Then the knowledge we acquire prove water off the buffalo’s back!

Attitude: It is clear our attitude decides our altitude in life though I like to stay rooted to the ground level of reality to feel the pulse of common folks. There is no point in trying to go high only to come down with a thud. Step by step we all can rise higher holding hands with few taking the lead. It should be a mutual, cooperative effort.

Teamwork: Teamwork is what decides in the end where we find ourselves in. We should pool our resources, knowledge and wisdom to make our ride sublime. That is what democracy and freedom is about. Modern lifestyles and technology mean no one is having a monopoly on ability and knowledge. We need leaders from among our most capable but we still choose them.

Harsh Reality

Sadly the reality remains mired like in the past. Few try to ride roughshod – give them an inch in terms of respect and leverage and they grab a yard extending to a mile even! That leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Their disappointments, failures and setbacks are taken out on the hapless subordinates or co-workers. The workplace is soon reduced to a hell place where everyone has to watch their backsides; body and mind blows come from every direction! It is found that the majority work in unhappy environments when few walk away with deeds that are plain unfair. Despite clear guidelines the grey areas enable them to have their foul play.

We deserve better

Why the majority has to put up with acts that borders on a slavish past? We all seek dignity and perform best with encouragement and rewards and not when under duress and unpredictability. But our workplaces are plainly not harmonious even to those who have the knowledge, attitude and yearn for teamwork. In such a situation everyone is out to save own skin and that leads to making others scapegoats for own omission and commission. Then even in most efficient of workplaces some are loaded with work while others have an easy time to get away scot-free. These cast a pall of gloom and reflect in the attitude of all those who have to work in such inharmonious places. Though perfection will prove a dream we can do our part within our limitations.

Set them Right

Thus far and no more: Rather than serving collective prison terms we should make it clear where we draw the line beyond which we just walk out. No point in suffering a day longer. Let one door close and sure another will open and in such cases better ones.

Majority should unite: They should not give in to divide and rule. There are limits. It should be made clear that air inside is stifled and injurious to health!

Take issues by the scruff of the neck: Take them head-on and confront the top management but by peaceful means of course, otherwise some will lose it. There are limits everywhere and prove to those that matter that knowledge, right attitude and team work will change the landscape and make the vital difference.

We all can relate with the harsh reality of workplace life except those who are fortunate enough to be above such realities. Let the majority be not short-changed at home, workplace, countries and as humanity in general. When other species find strength in numbers why not us when we pride we are at the top in the pecking order? Time indeed to reflect and take the bull by the horns!

Hi Siva,

Great article... In all this our attitude plays an important role. If we allow ourselves to be swayed by the wind, then we are bound to end up with the herd.. Like you said, we need to take charge, but the part of taking charge comes with attitude... Regards, Savio

Thank you Savio. Majority yearn for fair play. But I have seen in many workplaces few are tyrannical, unpredictable, always want to have their way. Others become constrained by such behavior. Better to nip them in the bed so that they know where to stop instead of running all over others. Majority should join together in the interest of the organization they work for too than allow few to dictate terms - siva

Hi Siva,
As usual, excellent and thought provoking article. I still believe that there are more of "us" than there are of "them", however, "someone" must lead the charge for change.

Thank you, Rubinstyn for your take. Agreed it is not easy for one to take the lead but collectively we need to stop the rot. I have read about one with an all knowing attitude. Others could not stand him any longer. They joined together in desperation to tell him - none of us can accept your behavior. His response - I know that also! siva

I cannot imagine anything worse dear Siva , than having to work day in and out in company that is rumbunscious to say the least. Awful..! I do hope that is not your experience my friend ..Egg shells are not comfortable to walk on . It is like hugging a hedgehog trying to please some people , but I just ask the Lord to bless them , and let Him soften the rough edges .... and mine as well .
God bless you today my friend with peace and joy .

Thank you Stella. The fact of the matter is few do bring extraneous and family issues to the workplace and react negatively to others who are gracious enough to put up with them. But there are limits. Some are always sick and I have worked with few whose attitude is so negative that their workplaces can do without them, to put it politely! Some are also bossy despite having no business to be with their negative contribution. These are facts of life that I have encountered and many put up with daily. We all need much blessings to tide over such difficult people! - siva

Thanks Evanxbls. I have worked in places where one bad apple ruins the atmosphere to the extent others are on tenterhooks as to what to expect from that person. Some do bring their personal issues to the workplace, sad to say, as a routine. They have to be stopped on their tracks - siva

Great post my dear friend and I agree there is always a bad apple in every team. There is always one that will look hard for negativity no matter how good an idea. It makes me wonder why some people do this. Maybe it's a cry for attention.

Thanks Terry. As much as I like to put them behind, those with bad attitudes are etched in our minds! Maybe I am guilty - the good they did lies interred in their bones but the evil lives on in my mind! siva

Bad apples hamper work and bring misery to others. They sometimes keep the boss in their pockets and do not get caught easily.

"Team work" in the work place has now been replaced with "scheme work?" We have to be on guard all the time and paranoia is common place.

The work place has become more "stern" compared to earlier years, producing an atmosphere of mistrust and disloyalty. It is also far more favourable for the employers than the employees. In short, employees get the shaft and employers hold all the cards!

It puts people in fear for their job whenever they have anything that comes up in their life that might prove to be interfering with their work. There's no room for being human!

The dog-eat-dog overtone makes today's workplace very unpleasant, and at the most deadly because it pushes people past their limits. Work was supposed to be a blessing in every way - it's a sad state of affairs that it has become so brutal and hard to endure.

Well done dear Siva

Thanks for your input dear Subra. Work is a means to earn a living. Most are not after wealth but want to lead a stress-free life. I have seen some employers acting like slave drivers even today. But in every workplace there are few who just take advantage of others - they are mere passengers and indulge in divide and rule. Sometimes they survive currying favors from employers who seem to plant such - a cat among the pigeons! These are needless stress creators and the enemy is within surviving like weeds. They spoil the whole set-up. The good is forced to leave in exasperation finally - siva
