Leading, Speaking and Writing: Being an Ambassador for Self Improvement

Sometimes there days where achieving nothing is about the only positive step that can be made, but on other days it is possible to right the world's wrongs with the stroke of a wand. Yet one of the best ways we can always help is by dedicating your life to help others, this is about one man's quest to do exactly that in the areas of leadership, speaking, and writing.

Toastmasters and Wikinut

Outside of my work commitments right at this moment there are three aspects of my life that are vital and believe it or not it is all about giving back to others, these are leadership, speaking and writing.

Four years ago I joined Toastmasters and my original intentions for doing so were to improve my public speaking skills in order that it would help me perform well interviews and further act as an aid to my career activities, with similar motivation I also started writing in part to demonstrate my abilities and in order to be more comfortable with work related problems, first on my own site, then on a specialist technology site and from there I have migrated to commercial sites such as Triond, Wikinut, and others. My writing and public speaking activities started with the intention to demonstrate how good I was at anything I could put my mind to and how that could aid me with prospective employment.

Yet the truth is that speaking and writing goes far beyond this and the challenges I have faced during the last year have brought this clearly home to me. Sometimes we must do things out of necessity that for certain periods of time mean we are not in control of our own destiny, changing work priorities, the death of a close family relative and other serious challenges over the past year have all thrown obstacles in my way, and looking back on that time I may have done things differently with a bit more warning, but that is something we rarely have the ability to control. Of course I recommend that all writers join a local Toastmasters club in order to improve their storytelling abilities, but I also recommend that good speakers also learn to write, write down those speeches and publish them on the Internet at the very least.

An Inspirational Moment

At this moment it is clear to me that in order to improve myself further I have to offer my knowledge, my passion, my skills to other people in order to help them improve, in part this is about being a mentor to those that are looking to learn in any area where I am able of offer assistance but also providing something else.

The Toastmasters Ambassador Program in intended to motivate, educate and inspire fellow Toastmasters through the education program offered within its clubs, this is an inspiring program which should encourage interest in what Toastmasters has to offer. For any toastmasters club to be successful it must have members that are reaching their goals, even if that simply means they are coming just to have the courage just to stand up and speak three or four words, maybe they take ten years to reach the Competent Communicator designation, this does not matter, what does matter is that this week each person performs a little better than they did last week and this is why I am a committed Toastmaster.

It is important to spread the word about things that can help people grow and for me this comes in two distinct areas, how people write and how people speak, and ironically these are both a key part of the third aspect being considered here - leadership; it is my personal challenge to assist any person to grow in any small way that they can, this is not about me writing articles or giving speeches (although I will continue to do both), it is about helping others grow and I will do this any way I can.

Educational Seminars

During my time in Toastmasters it is giving educational seminars that has given me immense pleasure and this is because it is possible to put into them a combination of:

  • Personal knowledge
  • Personal experience
  • Research, and
  • Intuition

This should result in educational improvement for the whole group, indeed if it were possible then I would actually dedicate much of my future career to providing such seminars in the areas of leadership, speaking and writing, three crucial subjects that are not taken as seriously as they should be by the world as a whole.

Improving Writing Skills

Much of my writing on Wikinut has been focused on writers improving their skills, this can be seen in these recent articles:

As one of the site moderators I am able to encourage other writers to tune and improve their skills. With modern writing sites there are sadly many authors that churn out endless amounts of poorly written articles on a daily basis on the assumption that they will earn something from it, in reality they fool no-one but themselves. Any new writer that comes to this site with a desire to grow and learn will receive it from any of the more seasoned writers on Wikinut, including myself. As with public speaking people can only improve as a writer by taking part and I am privileged to be assisting new writers on a daily basis.

Unlike Toastmasters there is no recognised program that a writer can work through to improve their skills, but Wikinut offers boundless encouragement the those that wish to try, and I am proud to be a part of that as a site moderator, indeed I encourage every Toastmaster to also become a writer and regularly contribute in an on-line arena.

We all Face Challenges

There is not a person on this planet that does not go through the roller-coaster ride when it comes to emotional highs and lows, especially when this is associated with the death of a close relative that has been such an influence upon your life. Truth is time ticks on and we must get back to normality, getting on with the things we love in life is important and often the best way we can honour those who have passed is by re-dedicating ourselves to those important aspects in our lives and do a better job than we have ever done before.

Part of what I have done in order to re-dedicate myself in this area can be seen from the new profile images that I have placed on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other sites where I have an active presence, but life is more than simply re-branding yourself and starting over. I know that I cannot achieve everything, I know that I have limits (something, perhaps, I would never admit before), indeed there have been days where achieving nothing is about the only positive step that can be made, but there is always a certain satisfaction in helping someone else achieve their goals and that is more important to me today than it has ever been.

How do YOU Need to Grow?

Please take time to consider this question, it is an important one.

Mentors and ambassadors help us all grow, I often remember advice given by my first employer and in many respects I now wish that I had managed to stay in touch over the years but when I was young I would have to say that I was certainly always self-assured and felt that there were no limits, yet on the journey of life you do find out what these are, and sometimes having a friendly ear to ask that dumb question to is always very useful, so here it is how can I help you?

Think about that for a while, you will be glad that you you noticed that someone was there to help.

Got Something to Say?

Thinking about making your own personal contribution? You should do something about it now! Your viewpoint is important! The first thing you could do is ADD a comment providing your own thoughts and feedback, which is always appreciated. Sometimes however your thoughts transcend the limits of a simple comment, then you need to make your own contribution of 300 words or more; perhaps penning your own article is more appropriate, well you can make your own views felt.

Join Wikinut today and have some fun telling the world about your views and how the world needs to change.

I believe the ability to express oneself is really a powerful thing. People who have taken public speaking classes, or who are in groups like Toastmasters, or even people who write online, are lucky because they can share their views and not remain silent.
