A short poem, and true story about a horse called Lena.

When the travelling folk moved on
I was unwanted and left alone.
No thought as to whether I'd live or die
My bed was the earth, my roof the sky.

I had no shelter from wind or rain
No company, save a passing train.
The railway embankment was my base
Where I spent my nights and days.

Food was scarce, I had to kill
Night brought no shelter from the chill.
What had I done to fall from grace?
Abandoned by the human race.

Days into months, months to a year
Now of humans I had great fear.
People arrived now and then
They tried to catch me, but all in vain.

I didn't know then, as my trust had gone
These were people who'd found me a home.
After some months, they got the better of me
And carted me off to the Sanctuary.

Shocked and frightened and terribly scared
I couldn't believe that somebody cared.
Plenty of friends and fresh tasty food
Life's now worth living and I'm feeling good.
