Let My People Go Part 12

God calls Moses up into the mountain where he remains for forty days and forty nights. Meanwhile the people below get restless.

God Reveals Himself.

It is at Mount Sanai that God once again calls Moses to come up unto him. Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and seventy of the elders of Israel were to go with him but they were to worship from a distance for Moses alone could come near to God. Before leaving Moses had the young men kill oxen, the blood of which he sprinkled some upon the altar that he had built and the remainder he sprinkled on the people. He also took the book of the Covenant and read in the presence of the people concerning all that God had commanded them. “Then went up Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu and seventy of the elders of Israel: And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink”. Exodus 24:9-11. It is interesting to note here that in Exodus 33:20 God tells Moses that “Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me and live”. We may remember too, the words of Jacob in Genesis 32:30“. I have seen God face to face and my life is preserved”. God Shows

Forty Days And Forty Nights.

“And the Lord said unto Moses, come up to me into the mountain and be there and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law and commandments which I have written that thou mayest teach them. And Moses rose up and his minister Joshua: And Moses went up into the mount of God” Exodus 24: 12-13. Moses seems to know that this time he will be gone longer than usual, for he tells the people that Aaron and Hur are still with them and to bring any problems to them. “And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount” Exodus 24: 15. Moses must have been a very patient man, if not with the people than certainly with God, for the Lord leaves him waiting for six day! “And the glory of the Lord abode upon Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud. And the sight of the glory of the Lord was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights”. Exodus 24: 16-18.

Moses is Given the Law

Exodus chapter 25 and to the end of chapter 31 contain only the words that God spoke to Moses during his forty days at the top of Mountain Sinai. We can only assume that Moses ate and slept as he had done before for there is no reference to such things. The Lord gives very specific instructions about all things starting with the Ark of the Testimony. It may be of interest here to note that when God tells Moses to speak to the children of Israel about bringing an offering that he is emphatic about the words “willingly with his heart” Exodus 25:2. Obviously God does not want anything that is given grudgingly! It is soon evident too that God wants everything done exactly as he says as he describes everything in exact detail. He continues with directions for making the gold candlesticks, the tabernacle and the altar of burnt offering. Directions for the court of the tabernacle are also explicit. God than tells Moses that Aaron and his sons must become the priests for his people. In a blow by blow description, he explains how the holy garments for the priests must be made and worn. He speaks of the ephod and breastplate and other holy garments and explains how Aaron and his sons are to be consecrated. The Lords tells Moses that there must be a daily offering and describes in great detail how the altar must be respected and sanctified ending with an explanation of the holy oil and a reminder about keeping the Sabbath day.

The People Rebel

In the meantime the people at the foot of the mountain are growing impatient! After all forty days and forty nights are a long time for someone to be up in a mountain. You can almost hear the people talking “what if a wild beast has devoured this Moses! Are we going to wait here forever”? We don’t know when the seeds of discontent first started to sprout - maybe it was during the second or third week but we know that before the forty days were up the crowds had descended on Aaron demanding that he make them Gods to go before them. “As for this man Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him” Exodus 32: 1. Apparently, Aaron was not about to argue with the people and may even have been having doubts himself. “And Aaron said unto them, break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons and of your daughters and bring them to me. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after that he made it a molten calf: and they said, these be thy Gods, o Israel, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt. And when Aaron saw it he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, tomorrow is a feast to the Lord. And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. Exodus 32: 2-6.
God will not like this!

40 is a very significant number in Judaism, noah and the flood was 40 days, the years in the desert 40 days, Moses's time with God 40 days. 40 days is a transition from one level of spiritual understanding to another.

Thank you Carol, Yes I've noticed that 40 is a significant number in Judaism. It also spills over into Christianity with Jesus spending 40 days in the wilderness. Blessings.

When seeds of doubt and discontent are allowed to sprout ~ faith will surely diminish.

Thanks ~ Kingwell ~ for sharing this.
