Let them eat cake: New rules for cake eating culture

"Let them eat cake."

Those have apparently been the words of Marie Antoinette, royalty of France, when told that there was no more bread in her kingdom for the people to eat.

ANC reviews eating of cake: Stuff yourself but make sure the lowlife hungry peasants don't see you doing it

I'm paging through the newspaper I had picked up at Lanseria when we came here to Cape Town. I found the most delightful report in it about our current ruling party, the ANC, that reminded me so much of the words of Marie Antoinette, though with a new fresh twist.

Apparently when the current rulers have their lavish expensive parties and celebrations, they will no longer eat cake in front of the hungry, impoverished citizens. I quote the report:

Party reviews eating of cake

ANC leaders will no longer eat cake in front of party supporters at annual celebrations. The matter was raised as part of ANC chairman Baleka Mbete's report on its centenary celebrations held in Bloemfontein earlier this year.

"It was proposed that for future January 8 celebrations the eating of cake should be made in private, as it does not augur well to eat in front of our members and supporters while they are not eating," the assessment of the centernary celebrations found.

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu told the newspaper that everyone in the national executive committee (NEC) agreed that the public cake-eating culture should be reviewed.

"The issue is how do you celebrate 100 years of the ANC with 150 000 people, when it comes to this area of eating cake?" he was quoted saying.

"How do we tweak this culture and make it less insensitive?"

According to the report the cake proposal was first tabled at the NEC meeting in early February.

In future, the cake will be displayed at the stadium, but will not be eaten in public.

Mthembi told the newspaper the ANC was looking at alternatives such as donating the cake to orphanages and schools.

Wow. They're so busy running/ruining the country.

I show Elmarie the report, since she's come in and asks me what I'm chuckling about. She reads it aloud in some kind of accent.

Yep, even the eating of cake has become a very important matter. Who must see you eat your cake and have it?

I guess a "public cake eating culture" will henceforth be one where you rudely go off and eat your cake by yourself somewhere, while at the same time where cake is to be chowed in top secret so as not to be rude and "insensitive".
