A thought as to how we spend our precious time within our lives.

Living In The Moment

What does it mean to live in the moment? I’ve heard it discussed at parties, and with other friends over dinner but I really wonder is it possible? And how many of us actually achieve that goal? I know the various parables in the Bible and other works of written wisdoms that allude to something just the opposite. The Bible writers scorned the dull sluggard for lingering forever in the moments of life that give hedonistic pleasure; and fairy tale authors write with admiration about those people that live like the most worthy ant. Slaving away for the inevitable future with only thoughts of success and secret ambition driving them along the way.

As the years of my life accumulate I find that one concept seems to hold rather true and positive toward the human condition, and that is that moderation in all things serves man consistently and completely from the cradle to the grave. If one accepts this postulate then could there be a plane of moderation between enjoying living in the moment and still maintaining an eye for life in the future? Why do we tend to focus more and more on the future? What will I wear to work tomorrow, will my boss accept my report or will he pick it apart…again? Will the kids do well on the test, or I don’t have enough money to pay the power bill what will I do? As our mind does triage on our events to come we tend to move faster and faster toward a seemingly inescapable vortex that pulls us to a point where we are attending our children’s piano recital but yet not hearing it. Or we are playing with our grandchildren but our minds are engrossed in more stressful pursuits. Or worse yet some of us fall back and concentrate on the past instead of the future. And the past robs us from our time to “live in the moment” just like the future is doing to others. When you think about it all we really have is the present moment. The past is gone and can’t be changed or recalled. The future may come or we could gasp our last at any time there are no guarantees.

Thus, if we seek moderation here and attempt to enjoy the moment of life we actually have and also keep a partial but dedicated eye to our futures will we enjoy our journey of life more than those who refrain from living in the moment? If we master the art we will at least be living our lives more to our notion that to someone else’s.
