Losing Writers More than Gaining Them On Wikinut

Posted in Wikinut>Writing>Personal Experiences

I've noticed more and more writers on Wikinut are going away. Most are just hibernating, aren't they, or have gone for good?

Those Who Have Been On Wikinut For A Year

Wikinut, as far as I'm concerned, has been a good writing site.

It's where like-minded people and kindred spirits (by the Law of Attraction) converge and culminate in and express their unique experiences, poetry, etc. .

Lately, the numbers have been dwindling. Most new-found friends I knew, a number of them, have disappeared, or seem to have refused to have anything to do with Wikinut. A few, on Face Book, I have tried to reach out to seemed indifferent, to all intents and purposes.

Although my primary intention to write for Wikinut had been motivated by compensation, and then realizing it didn't pay so much and so well as expected. the fact I've gained lots of friends, and famous writers at that, and we all are into this writing experience together, made the effort well worth it. Thumbs up!

But where have they all gone? To count a few I remember, Asqar Khan, who started here with so much to give than expect, and a few others; Minakshi, where is she? And Phoenix Montoya who had great credentials writing from previous sites? Geeta Arora the teenage girl who could write poetry on equal footing with the greatest ones?. Shining Star? Crystal Ramsunair? The list goes on...

Little by little, every one would seem to be thinning out, unlike before when the thought reigned supreme, the more the merrier. Wikinut had been my first opportunity to try my hand at writing in front of a world audience. May all the rest of my friends persevere and go the extra mile though the earning is not much.

Kaylar, the great Wikinutter I admire, in one of his articles offered suggestions that Wikinut could do, but to no avail.

Meanwhile, it pains me to see Wikinutters, one by one, slithering down the slope away from Wikinut.

The opportunity to write here is nice, however, certain key things must change if Wikinut hopes to keep some of us around. Central among the needs (for me) are 1) response to questions to the site. There are none, 2) The ability of writers to communicate directly with each other without posting notes as comments on articles, 3) the ability to delete inappropriate comments and spam, and 4) clearer information re the formulae used to calculate payments to writers. That's just my short list - I am certain others have things that are important to them.
The management of the site simply needs to attend to the needs of writers or it will lose most/all of us over a period of time to other sites which are more responsive to our needs.

Thanks, David. First of all, I did some major editing on the article which I wrote hastily, spontaneously and sloppily and the revision will come out shortly. I wholeheartedly agree with your suggestions. It's painfully sad one disgruntled writer left and, sadder still, in the same breath maligned you with baseless accusation. So one writer left and you, as are everyone else faced with the same situation, were helplessly unable to delete the inappropriate comments, which is the only alternatively peaceful means to end the tiff. Coupled with your suggestions, kaylar had them too in this link: http://reviews.wikinut.com/The-Trouble-with-Wikinut/mne318n0/

Hello Buzz what an accurate synopsis you have made here. I also initially joined for compensation and never got a cent. I was faced with the prospects of leaving to find a site that actually pays.I chose to stay because of the familiar writers, who have disappeared in droves. I could not have presented these problems clearer than how you and the others have highlighted them above. The question now is what to do about all of this.I have a question, which to some might seem silly, but are our articles getting placed or shown sufficiently elsewhere for the vital clicks=money?

Thanks, my friend Andre, for weighing in with your equally valid opinion. Though Wikinut is the most viable and friendly site for writers, we are in the dark as to how we are benefited from our contributions to get the site afloat, all things being equal. I'm confident, though, that the Wikinut management will get our concerns addressed and threshed out in due time.

I am so much inspired by the information on Wikinut and I am also of the view that the number is fast dwindling and mine is no exception soon. Whatever the said and done, promises seems far below the expectation and never reply for any queries to all surprise. If this can shed light on the new blood and budding writers true to its words, that is what we expect from this great site.

I think we have to hold on, P.D. There's still much room for improvement as Wikinut is still new. It is aligned with the best websites, nominally speaking. Remember Wikipedia and Wikileaks, which are success stories.:) So hang on, my friend.

I'm at the point to leave after I started with enthusiasm. But I have the impression, that here people are writing but not reading and those who write are probably too much motivated from the money aspect. I'm not interested in any money aspect as I see, that this spoiles all and every thing.
I have received only a very few comments. The spam occupies the most space and I have suggested to give the people here the option to delete comments to get rid of the spam. Then the administration doesn't need to be engaged. I have written several times to Johnny but nothing happens and no answer. I go now to my messages and if he hasn't responded then I will delete my account here, before the spam takes over...

Hey, BeiYin, the article is not meant to discouraged new Wikinut newbies. It is meant to keep us together and attract new budding writers.. Wikinut is still experiencing "growing pains" so to speak. I don't know but maybe it's high time Wikinut should adjust to change, and change can only come from the gripes of its writers, and they should act quickly.

yeah even I have seen many cold and dead follow ups with pages as late as march or even earlier..well I find that Wikinet has a format that is less than dynamic....it does not allow html code then publishing yardsticks are skewed i found that a page less than one tenth my quality was published and editors here were nit picking my post-rather impeccable three times...then pennies that come in are hardly a compensation......well this makes for a site's overall likeability

I will send an e-mail to the big guns, as a Moderator there is nothing more I can do.

I know we did lose some because PayPal will not pay to their countries.

Some Wikinut removed because they were plagiarizing!

A lot of people need to realize that poetry is not going to make them money on any site like this, its just not something that pays well or something people search for (google). So all the people who only wrote poems may have left disappointed.

Finally many writers do not do themselves any good - very few promote their own articles, and some don't even bother putting in tags.

But..with all due respect, Mark, that doesn't address the concerns of the majority. I admit poetry pays less. Well, many loves the effusion which poems afford them. It releases them from stress but at any rate, I hope everything else will be addressed as requested. The major ideas for change should be heeded. Or we continually bleed dry of writers. Nothing personal. Love this site too much for friends to leave too soon.

I can submit my old articles here and still make money - is that not great and my poems and articles do get read by wikinutters that I know for sure. so please do not take a negative stand and have a bad impression. good luck.

Thanks, David and P.D. It is unfortunate that, though I wrote this article originally as my own unbiased observation, discontent or unhappiness had, it turned out, been bursting at the seams for a long time already. It doesn't look too good washing the dirty linen in public especially when it is incumbent upon us to invite others for writers to grow in number on the site but what could prevent airing gripes from running its course? Yet, consistent with what I've said throughout the thread, I am optimistic something good will come out of this.

Very interesting article and thread. I agree this site has great people and is worth staying on for that reason alone--but I also agree fully with David's short list and hope the site administration heeds our needs soon.

Mark has a good point that poetry does not gain many page views--but the articles do not seem to, either.

Still, My primary motivation in posting here and elsewhere is to share the writing itself, and not only to earn money.

I agree with DEEPS that patience would be optimal, especially since wiki is new and growing. Hopefully we'll get paid something, eventually. The fact that we can post work we've published elsewhere is a big plus.

Personally, I do not always have as much time to read new authors here, as I would wish to. Sometimes other life concerns or priorities draw me off for weeks at a time, but I plan to come back periodically even if there's no money--to be an at least semi- permanent wiknutter.

However, I do think the site needs to open avenues of communication between members and the site and between members themselves.

The page formatting is great. But that's not all we need as writers here.

Thanks for writing this, Buzz!

At Factoidz I write articles with so many researches... the site can cause me headaches too but its all worth it coz I earn my keep. At Triond, I write at ease... opinions, my pets, poetry even my non nonsense but the fact is I know how to work my posts at Triond, so even I only earn there 2 dollars a month... Its OK. Its for the love of the game.... But here?

Hello, Humza my friend, thanks for coming. I have reason to believe that Mark, our moderator, has already relayed to the "Big Guns" our pleas as he says above on this thread.

That having been presumably done, he can only do so much in his capacity as moderator but at the same time he must have had an inkling of what the big guns are thinking about or how they have reacted to our issues presented here. In fairness to Mark, the fact that he has laid this matter at the doorstep of the big guns is already one big step.

Everything else now lies with our Chief Nut. And the plot seems to thicken...

"Nutty" David, meaning strange? I wonder what note/comment Mark passed on to you, but it's OK not to divulge it here if it's confidential.

I'd like to share the Newsletter I received via email from Wikinut.com this morning in case not every one did, relevant to the issue on this page:

"Hi Buzz,

Wikinut continues to grow!

We've come to the end of another successful summer here at
Wikinut (although some of you will just be entering Spring!)
and once again we have been delighted to see the quality and
variety of writings that have been contributed to the site.

Our authors are the backbone of a strong community. Please
take a few minutes to read some of the other pages that have
been submitted to categories that interest you. We think
you'll be really impressed by some of the articles, and if you
are then why not leave a comment complementing your fellow
author on their hard work.

Don't forget about Tags.

Adding tags to your pages is a great way of helping readers to
find your content. Tags should be used to pin-point the key
topics you're covering in your page, and you should aim to use
at least 6 of them on every page you write.

If you're not adding a good number of relevant tags to your
pages then you're not giving your work the best chance of
success once it's published.

Read our advice on tags here:

http://nut.bz/13qyf6-f/

Our moderators have highlighted poor use of tags as one of the
most common mistakes they come across.

Read some tips from Wikinut Moderator Mark Gordon Brown here:

http://nut.bz/rc2ul5ym/
http://nut.bz/258t_vv1/

Publish your own work - not somebody else's.

Every week we have to regrettably inform some authors that we
are closing their account because they have violated our terms
of use.

The most common error is publishing copied content. This is
not acceptable and will not be tolerated. As a general rule
you should only ever submit articles which you have written
yourself. Our moderators are working hard to prevent copying,
so don't be tempted to take short-cuts or be dishonest.

Original quality content is always the goal for our authors.

http://nut.bz/n0qufgw6/

Keeping our minimum payout low!

Last year we announced that we would lower our minimum payout
from 5.00 GBP (Pounds) to 2.50 GBP (pounds) for a period of 3
months. As you've probably noticed we've actually maintained
this lower rate right through 2011 too, and I'm pleased to
confirm that the lower rate will be in place through to the
year end.

Having a lower minimum payments means that more authors are
being paid each month. Even for authors only receiving modest
payments we feel that having the lowest minimum level possible
is a good way to show that we're serious about sharing
revenues.

Google+ for everyone.

Many authors are active on social media sites such as facebook
and twitter. These are a great way to keep potential readers
informed about your new articles, and also a great way to
recruit new authors to Wikinut.

This week Google's social media platform, Google+, has finally
opened it's doors to everyone - another great place to promote
your pages.

http://plus.google.com/

Remember that every Wikinut page has a handy "short" URL which
you can use in social media or emails. Look for it at the top
of each of your articles.

http://nut.bz/24iotdxb/

Thank-you to the moderators!

Once again it's time to offer thanks to our hard working
moderators. Without them we'd be swamped by copied content and
get-rich-quick scams, they're an essential part of the Wikinut
team. But remember that the moderators aren't just here to
police the rules, keep an eye out for their comments and you
could pick up some useful tips too." So there it is, some portions deleted for lack of space.

But I'm sure every one was emailed.

Wow Buzz,

I saw this page the day you published but couldn't comment as I was in a hurry, and then missed to read again until now.

I too worry of losing many good friends from here.

But we all can communicate with each other and continue to be communicate if we could get their emails.

I expected that many of the friends would post their opinions on my Wikinut Poets Blog, but I got disappointed as everyone has their commitments in their life and probably they won't find time to prolong with new friendships.

My dear friend Rathna, nice to see you. Well, as you can see, what I thought had been an inconsequential article has had responses that stretched this far.

OK, losing friends is not only our loss individually but a big collective loss to Wikinut itself. If you don't oil the engine of growth, the individual spare parts, the whole machine will splutter and stop working.

But thank God, it hasn't yet.

Namaste, my friend!

Humza, my friend. If you read my reply to David above and read the payment scheme from Wikinut, that's clear enough. Some writers have been subtracted from the community "every month" because of plagiarism. Fine.

But how about the others? They were not ones to plagiarize for sure? They were as enthusiastic as you and I when they started writing here but later on dropped out for various reasons. I hazard a guess, among other things: Payment.

Manner of payment has been explained above.

What's left for Wikinut to do is:

1) Enable writers to delete inappropriate and inflammatory comments and SPAM which pollute our pages. IF TRIOND CAN HAVE THAT FEATURE, WHY CAN'T WIKINUT HAVE IT, TOO???

2) Enable writers to communicate with each other and with Wikinut.com via a FORUM slot like others have.

It's as simple as that but why is it taking so long for them to even consider it?

I think so too, David. I just saw you on YCN and I registered a while ago and was amazed to see how distinguished your writing and private career is and it's a shame your specialist input to the discussions here seems to have been taken lightly. (Still looking for the click button on how I can be your fan on YCN.:D)

At any rate, thanks, David, for your mighty support and other friends as well for weighing in with their sentiments. I will stick it out with Wikinut even as I try my luck with other sites.

We've all tried our best, my great friend, but it seems that's just about all we can do.

It's been nice for me and others to know you better through all this and what sterner stuff you're made of..:)

Buzz (and others who may be interested): To follow a writer over at YCN, 1) Join YCN as a Contributor yourself, 2) Go to my (or anyone else's Profile Page) and then 3) click on "Follow"... then confirm as asked.
I hope to see some of you Wikinuts over there!

Kab Buzz - you really made a history for this article. When it comes to payment Wikinut has already down it to 2.5 sterling pounds from 5 sterling pounds.

I am also writing at Hubpage, Triond, Factoidz, ExpertsColumn, Allvoices, Yahoo, Bukisa but I did not think to leave Wikinut - why? I considered Wikinut a learning institution. And I have so many virtual friends here.

Wow... some hornets' nest You kicked over, Buzz!

As someone who has been on this site for about a week, and who has already earned a whole 3.7 pence for posting over 30 stories, I have to say that people aren't really here for the money, are they?

Wikinut is a pretty basic site, it seems, and is not yet making enough money to update servers and provide some of the additional features mentioned as desirable by some respondents above.

If people want a sense of community, I suggest they try the Experience Project, which has nearly 10 million stories posted and where friendships are more easily made. EP management also reply to emails!

I am staying here, not to make money, although it would be very useful, but to stay in contact with skilled and knowledgeable writers, whom I now think of as friends.
Let's support our moderators and work with them, not against them. I believe they are doing their best. Maybe I am throwing in an inciteful comment, but I, personally, would not use the "Wikinut" site to mention other sites.

I guess that maybe despite the negative things said here, no wikinutters will think of leaving because of the sense of community though some few have left, which is the gist of my article. But with the support of the moderators acting as shepherds, let's hope the flock will not scatter.:)

Well, I am still very new here, but I am enjoying the experience thus far. I do agree that some of the suggestions that others have made would improve the site. I have written for a few other sites, and they do allow authors to communicate by private messages, as well as giving them the ability to remove negative or inappropriate comments! That definitely makes things easier for the writing community. Some even have a message board or forum where one can find help with editing, topic ideas, and many other things that writers are concerned about! Thanks for the article; I enjoyed reading it!

I agree with many of these fellow writers about what Wikinut could do to improve the site, but I also think that some people just have busy times in their lives and go in and out of writing. This has been the case with me over the last month or so. Now I'm trying to catch up on over 400 articles. Yikes!! Eventually I'll catch up and start writing again. Nice article. Thank you, Buzz.

Anybody here write at HubPages? You have to manually allow comments to appear, so no spam. There is a fabulous community that communicates mostly through the excellent forums. Payment is never an issues as it is prompt. And there's more ways to earn than just 50% of ad revenue. What else can I say? Wikinut isn't too bad when it comes to this type of passive income publishing, but HubPages does have some features that are lacking here. Give HubPages a visit and take a look for yourself http://billabongbob.hubpages.com/
This isn't meant to just be self promotion, but a genuine desire to help other aspiring online authors to get ahead ;). I enjoyed reading all of the comments here, it does give a sense of community :D
