Love Them

As another school year begins in the US, a retired inner-city teacher's exasperated reflection on his kids and how to reach them.

Love Them

How can I show them I love them?
How can I show them I care?
September detentions, October suspensions,
It’s more than a teacher can bear.

Each day I feel more like I’m losing,
Each week at a war that’s not won.
And yet I come back for another attack
On an enemy second to none.

Yes, I love to learn, and I show them!
Yes, I need to seek, so I find!
Still too many get lost; such a terrible cost
To my health and the ones left behind.

So where is the key to their learning?
How can I unlock their hearts?
Despite all the pains, can I still break the chains
Which keep binding their innermost parts?

I wish I could say that I’ve found it,
As I keep searching gray skies above them.
But until that key’s found, and their chains are unbound,
I’ll simply continue to love them.
