The war is continuing and causing hardship for the American people. Everyone wants the war to come to an end. There's been talk of a peace treaty but very little information is coming out of Washington.

The meeting

Max had agreed to meet with a group of men from the food pantry. The one guy has access to a shortwave radio. After dinner was served and the cafeteria cleaned up Max went to the back of the room to attend the meeting. There were 8 men in attendance. When Max arrived that made 9 men and 1 woman. One of the ladies from the kitchen wanted to sit in on the meeting. The first thing on the agenda was the hardships they had to endure. It was a common consensus that everyone wanted peace. It had been a long winter made harder by the ongoing war.

Communication

The short wave radio was getting a good signal out of Washington. The house and senate were in round the clock negotiations to arrive at a solution for a peaceful end to the war. Joe, the guy with the shortwave radio suggested that they meet every evening to try to follow up on any headway being made. At this point they all felt hopeful. It was a good feeling to know they had some sort of communication.

The Message

The meeting lasted longer than what Max thought it would and after locking up the cafeteria he started back to the rooming house. It was a very cold night. The thermometer was registering -11 and it felt like it was dropping. Max couldn't remember a winter as cold as this one. He thought about stopping to see his friend Randal but then he thought it was a better idea to go back to his room. He'd check the generators at home and make sure they were up and running. It was too cold to go without heat.

Heat is a very good thing

When Max walked through the door at home he could feel the heat. That made him sigh in relief. He was cold and tired and needed a good night's sleep. When he walked over to check on Miss Renee she told him he'd had a visitor. He asked who but Miss Renee didn't know. All she knew was that it was a lady. She'd left a note in a sealed envelope for Max. Max looked at the envelope but couldn't imagine who had delivered the message. His name was written on the front of the envelope. He decided it would be better if he waited till he got to his room to open it. Miss Renee just raised her eyebrows as he walked away. She stood there watching Max walk up the stairs with the envelope in his hand.

The Mystery Lady

Max unlocked his door and walked inside. He closed the door quietly so as not to wake anyone that had retired for the evening. He glanced around the room and could tell that everything was exactly the way he left it. Max put the mystery envelope on the bed. The next thing he did was take his gun out of his holster and set it on the chair next to his bed. He sat down on the bed to remove his boots. His one foot was developing a blister from all the walking he was doing. He had some cream in his drawer to put on his foot. He kept it for times like this. It was just a little tube of antibiotic cream but it came in handy when he needed it. In the back of his mind he was wondering who the mystery lady was. Why would she drop off an envelope for him.

Exhausted

Max stacked the cans in front of his door just like he did every night. It was a ritual that he was used to. He knew he always had to be prepared for the unexpected. Max wanted to lay down and rest while he read the mystery note. He was cold and knew his warm blankets would feel good on a night like this. He felt weary tonight. These were definitely trying times. Max wasn't exactly what he would call a religious man but he did believe in God. He was going to say a prayer for peace. He climbed into bed and covered up with his two blankets and his quilt. They felt so good. As soon as his head hit the pillow he was out. He was totally exhausted. The envelope slid out of his hand and down on the floor.

It seems the world is icing over, including in your fictional story. The real fiction going on is about global warming, the sickening scam of the millennium.

Siva, I know. I had to have some sort of background for the love story that will take place. I wanted it to be different than anything anyone had read before. I didn't realize how much I would like my character Max. He's really growing on me. Thank you for reading my story.

Good start to the story. I want to know if they get peace, or what they have to go through. I also am curious about the letter.
