This is a fictional story about love, war and survival. The war is continuing but peace talks are taking place in Washington. Everyone is praying for an end to the senseless war.

Communication

Max had just finished reading the letter from Danielle. He had been sitting on his bed looking at the envelope. It was funny but the envelope smelled like her. She only used one type of perfume and this envelope definitely gave off her scent. It brought back memories of many nights shared together under the stars. She was fair and delicate like a spring flower but that didn't mean she was weak. She was one of the strongest women he'd ever known. The qualities she possessed were all the qualities that Max found so appealing. She was kind, open minded, sensual and delightful to be around. He loved her more today than ever before. He thought he'd lost her. A tear fell from his eye and he wiped it away with the back of his hand.

A Travel Plan

Max had to come up with a way to get to the old homestead. Technically it was only 30 miles from town. The problem was the subzero temperatures. He would walk the distance but that would put his life in danger. The weather was showing no signs of a warm up. The thermometer was reading -15 this morning. Max was known for his reasoning power but walking was not in the cards. There was no access to a vehicle and a bike would never make it with the high snow drifts.

The Old Homestead

Max knew exactly how to get to the old homestead. He'd traveled the roads many times. The problem was he didn't know if the roads were passable in the ice and snow. Danielle had said she'd come in on an army truck. They were equipped for rough terrain. Max didn't have access to anything like that. It had snowed all night and there was a very good chance that it would snow again before nightfall. He also knew that even if he made it to the fork in the road the rest of the way would be tricky at best and treacherous at worst.

A Map of the area

Max needed to find an old map of the country roads. There was a possibility that if he took all the back roads he could cut his travel time down. He'd go in the back way and cut through the woods up to the old barn. Then it would be a breeze to get to the house. He knew the library was still standing but he didn't know about the contents of the place. The first thing Max had to do was open up the food pantry and start the generators. Miss Jane always counted on him and he wouldn't let her down. After breakfast he'd go over to the library and see if anything was left inside. Hopefully that would be the case and he could find a country map.

The Cafeteria

Max made it to the food pantry in record time. He said a special prayer because the generators started right up. That was a gift from heaven. He opened the doors for the kitchen volunteers and helped set up for breakfast. Miss Jane was making her famous biscuits this morning. Max could smell the biscuits baking. He suddenly realized just how hungry he was. He went in the back supply cabinet and brought out some blackberry jam. While he was waiting for breakfast he tried to come up with a plan of action.

A Friend

Max sat at the table nearest the kitchen like he always did. He was a man that liked a routine. He put some blackberry jam on his biscuits and sat there enjoying every bite. The biscuits melted in his mouth. They were warm and flaky. As far as Max was concerned this was the perfect breakfast food. Before he'd finished breakfast a friend came over and sat next to him. Max had only known him since the war but he liked him. His name was Joe and he was a friendly guy. He was a lot taller than Max and appeared to be friendlier than Max. Joe began eating while Max talked. Max explained his dilemma. He asked about getting his hands on an old map. As luck would have it Joe had a key to the library. Max didn't ask how Joe had a key he was just glad that he did. When they were both done eating and cleaning up they started out in the direction of the old library.

I like it that Max prays it adds a realness to the story for me as I know that is what I would be doing for help, for hope and for thanksgiving for the smallest of things...Keep it coming.

Vickie, thank you for reading my story. I write as I go along and up to this point I'm not exactly sure how he will get to Danielle but I think he will find a way. It might take awhile though.

I like that Max is not afraid to shed a tear, pray, help at the food pantry, he is determined, he's hard working, he truly loves a lady, Max is the man many women dream about. I enjoyed it a lot! Excellent work!

That chapter was written in a way that makes us want to read more.

Great writing Nancy.

Perhaps love will always get us through such perils in some way. I hope so.

Spirited, thank you so much for stopping by to read this chapter. I've tried to make twists and turns along the way for Max and I actually got the idea from you about love so that was the next turn Max had to take. I love it though. Blessings to you! I think Max may have a little bit of you in him.

Carol, you are right and it would solve all the problems if Max had a snowmobile. The war is going on and he doesn't have access to one though so I'm not sure how he's getting to the old homestead. It's definitely a problem for him and for this writer. I have to think about it. Any ideas?

Alright can I just say something I really have a craving for a biscuit and jam now! lol But seriously I enjoyed this chapter especially because of the biscuits! My only critique is that I have a gluten allergy so biscuits are not in my wheelhouse! Great chapter, i apologize for my going on about biscuits!

Dawn143, thank you so much for stopping by to read this chapter. I had to smile when I read your comment because I felt just like you about the biscuits and I wrote the chapter. LOL Sorry about your gluten allergy. That is hard to deal with.

Getting through all that snow makes a man hungry. Looking for old maps with a belly full of biscuits must have been a big motivator!

LeRain, you are the best to take time out of your evening to read my story. Thank you. I've really been enjoying your articles on pearls. I look forward to more articles on gem stones. The biscuits get me every single time I stop to thank someone for reading my article. They look so good. Smiles to you tonight.
