Max is on his way to the library with his friend Joe. He wants to find an old map of the country roads. He thinks a map might help him get to the old homestead. The temperatures are still brutally cold and will make travel difficult.

The Library

Max was thankful that his buddy had a key to open the door at the library. It was one of the few buildings in town that had not been damaged. A lot of buildings were destroyed during the bombings. Max didn't ask Joe how he had a key. He didn't care. His only concern was finding an old map of the country roads. If luck was on his side he'd find what he was looking for. He was trying to find a shortcut to the old homestead. It was about 30 miles to his planned destination. Because of the arctic temperatures he had to have a good travel plan. Max needed to find the shortest distance possible. Joe's key fit the back door so that is where they entered.

Inside the Library

As soon as Max entered the building something felt strange. There were no people for one thing. The library used to have the ladies at the desks and children everywhere. Now the silence was very eerie. Max would not be surprised if a ghost popped out in the empty corridor. Things usually didn't spook Max but this building was definitely unnerving him. He didn't believe in spirits but here it could be a possibility. Everything was covered in dust. When he looked up he could see there was some damage to the ceiling. Evidently there had been some damage to the roof. Max heard Joe's footsteps as he walked through the building. They echoed around the room.

Searching for the map

Max always carried a flashlight with him and it sure came in handy in the dark library. There was no electricity to turn the lights on and no generator. That made it harder to search for a map. Max took his light out of his backpack and started searching where he thought maps might be located. He found a section of world maps and started looking in that area. He scanned all the shelves from side to side. Max found what he was looking for on the last shelf. It was a map of the town long before it had been built into a city. He took the map and folded it. Then he placed it in his bag. For just a minute he felt bad. There had been a time when he would have been in trouble. There were rules in the library. Everyone knew they had to go to the counter with their library card and check out their material. Max looked around and smiled. Rules had a way of changing. The dust was getting to him. He started coughing and knew it was time to leave. When Max walked outside Joe was already outside waiting for him. Max thanked his friend and went back to the rooming house.

Studying the map

Miss Renee was not in the sitting room when he arrived back at the rooming house. Max walked up the stairs and unlocked his door. As soon as he got into his room he put the map on the bed and took off his coat. He wanted a chance to study the map so that he could figure out a plan. He looked out his window and could see the snow coming down again. That was not a good sign. The weather was turning bad again. It had been like this all winter long. He pulled a bottle of water out of his bag and opened it. He then opened his drawer and took out a yellow marker to mark the path he would take. A snowmobile would come in handy right about now but he did not have access to one.

Finding a way

Max followed each road that would get him closer to his destination. There were roads that would make the trip shorter but they were risky. Some routes were longer but much safer. The cold temperatures were dangerous and Max knew he couldn't stay out in the weather for an extended period of time. It was time to go back to the food pantry. He folded his map and placed it in his drawer. There would be time after dinner to come up with a plan.

Max is bright to carry a flashlight with him, I remember when I was kid in school the lights were off, it was an awful experience, if I would've thought like Max I will had a flashlight with me. Excellent story!

Talk about feelings of hopelessness, that eeriness I think would feel horrific. I personally think living through something like that would be devastating emotionally. I like the feeling portrayed through this story.
