Max and Danielle have enjoyed their time together. The army supply truck will be picking up Danielle to take her back to the old homestead. The snow is beginning to fall and it will be a dangerous ride home.

Before Dawn

Danielle woke up long before there were any stirrings in the rooming house. It was very quiet. The only sounds she did hear was the generators humming. It was warm under the big quilt that Miss Renee had given her. She glanced out the window and could see snow falling. It was falling gently but she knew that could change in the blink of an eye. Today was the day she was leaving. Her heart was so sad. She was torn in many ways. She didn't want to leave Max but she did have responsibilities.

Despondent

Danielle's heart felt like it was breaking into a million pieces. How could she leave the man she loved? He was kind and loving. To look at him a person wouldn't think he had a soft side. Oh, but quite to the contrary he was as gentle as a lamb. Danielle could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. She began to cry and couldn't stop. By the time she had cried out all of her tears her pillow was wet. It felt like she couldn't go on alone. If this was what despair felt like then Danielle wanted no part of it. She had to force herself to get up and begin the day.

The first cup

Danielle walked softly down the stairs. Her first thought was to go in the kitchen and start brewing the coffee. Danielle wasn't familiar with this coffee pot but she knew she could figure it out. She went over to the pantry and searched around for the coffee. It was on the second shelf along with the sugar bowl. She carried them both over to the counter and proceeded to make the coffee. She took out the basket and counted 10 heaping tablespoons into the basket. There was an insert in the basket so she didn't have to use a paper filter for the coffee. She filled up the water container till it was full. The next step was to find the button to turn it on. On this machine the on button was on the side. She stood in front of the coffee pot for a few minutes to make sure it was working. At first she heard some gurgling but then she heard the water dripping into the pot. It didn't take long for the wonderful aroma to fill the air. Danielle thought that a nice cup of coffee was just what she needed.

Preparing to Leave

Danielle didn't bring much with her when she came into town. She had some jeans and a few sweatshirts and socks to keep her warm. She'd used a small bag for her necessities. In times like this she found it was best to travel light. There wasn't much room in the supply truck. She had to be ready when the army supply truck stopped to pick her up. Their time was limited and she didn't want to hold them up. Danielle could hear the wind howling outside. When she looked out the front window she saw the neighbor's dog running through the snow. That made her smile.

Sitting by the fire

Danielle was in the den sitting by the fireplace when Max walked into the room. As soon as she saw him she knew he'd been crying. His face was red and blotchy. He didn't want her to leave. Danielle didn't have a choice. Max would have to make plans to come to the farm as soon as he could. It was possible that he could get a ride in one of the army supply trucks. Danielle would talk to the guys. She really didn't want him to travel until he had totally recuperated. A relapse of the flu would not be a good thing. There was no medical facilities near the farm. Max sat down on the couch and put his arm around Danielle. They sat quietly without talking. They were both lost in their own thoughts.

Deep snow

It was close to two o'clock when the supply truck pulled up. The snow was so deep they had to stop in the road. Miss Renee yelled for Danielle. Max walked Danielle to the door. She pulled on her boots and put on her winter coat. She had a scarf wrapped around her neck and she was wearing a furry hat and gloves. She gave a big hug to Max and walked out the door. A blast of cold air hit her in the face as she walked down the drive. Max stood in the doorway until the supply truck pulled away.

I always thought it was a love story, but then I think everything is a love story, but no matter what kind of story it is, it is wonderful and well written...Someday I will learn how to do this...Honest.
