Melissa is in the hospital with a broken leg, dislocated shoulder and a concussion. Sam has just informed Max that Bobby's mother is in the hospital.

Questions answered

When Sam finished explaining to Max what had happened to Bobby's mom he got ready to leave. He had several stops to make before nightfall. It had stopped snowing but the roads were still bad. Max held the door open for Sam. He took some of the empty boxes outside for Miss Jane. After Sam went out the door to his next stop Max sat down at one of the tables. Joe came over and gave Max a cup of coffee. Max had so many thoughts going around in his head. Somehow Max needed to find a way to get to the army hospital. He needed to inform Melissa that her son was safe and well taken care. He wanted to take Bobby to see his mom.

Bobby's friend

Max and Joe stayed at the food pantry till the last of the breakfast crowd went home. He said his goodbyes and walked back to the rooming house. He found Bobby playing in the living room. He had a little friend next to him. Max had to smile when he saw the boys having so much fun.. As he walked into the kitchen Max could hear Bobby laughing. Miss Renee was busy making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. She had two sandwiches with milk and sliced apples on the kitchen table. Bobby was playing with the little boy down the street. Miss Renee had invited Christopher for lunch. He was close to the same age and the boys hit it off the minute they met each other. Max went into the living room and told the boys to go in the kitchen for lunch. The boys had been playing all morning so they were really hungry.

The details

Christopher went home after lunch and Miss Renee put Bobby down for a nap. Once Bobby was sleeping Miss Renee went back downstairs to talk to Max. She listened to what happened the day Max had found Bobby. Max told her all the details. Miss Renee was shocked when she learned the extent of the injuries Melissa Jones had suffered. Max said he would like to go to the army hospital and see her. The only way he could think of getting there was one of the army delivery trucks. Miss Renee sat in her chair by the fireplace. She was very quiet. She was thinking about finding a way to reunite Bobby with his mother. A tear fell down her face. She'd grown to love that little boy.

Danielle's letter

Max went upstairs to his room. He took Danielle's envelope out of his pocket. He had read her note last night but he wanted to read it again. The envelope smelled like Danielle. It was so nice. He missed her so much. She started out by saying how much she missed him. She longed for his arms around her. His warm kisses on her neck and her hand in his. He sighed as he continued to read. Her wish was for Max to ride out to the farm on the supply truck. She was expecting a new delivery a week from today. She ended her note with hugs and kisses. Max folded the note and put it back in his pocket. She held his heart in her hands. He wished he was with her now. He put his hand through his long hair. Danielle didn't know about Bobby. There was a lot to think about. A week didn't give him much time.

A plan

Max decided to visit his friend Randal. He wanted to bring him up to speed on everything that was going on. There was a possibility that he could help Max with a plan to get Bobby to the hospital. He really wanted Bobby to see his mom. Randal had connections that Max didn't have. He had a brother-in-law that worked at the hospital. He was an x-ray technician. Max didn't know where he lived. He was going to tell his friend the whole story from beginning to end. He needed help and if anyone could help him it would be Randal.
