Danielle wants Max to come out to the farm within the week. Bobby's mother is at the Army Hospital. Max needs to find a way to get Bobby to the Hospital to see his mom. Max has decided to visit his friend Randal and tell him everything that's going on. Randal may be able to help.

Visiting Randal

Max wanted to see his buddy Randal. He was going to skip going to the food pantry to help out with dinner. Joe could help Miss Jane with anything she needed. Danielle wanted Max to come out to the farm on the next army supply delivery. That was in exactly one week. It didn't give him much time to figure out how to get Bobby to the army hospital to see his mom. Randal had a brother-in-law that worked at the hospital. He was an X-Ray technician. Max was hoping he could help unite the mother and son. On the way to Randal's house Max passed a frozen pond. Max thought back to a time before the war. This was always such a peaceful and beautiful area.

Randal's home

Max saw Randal's home a block before he reached his door. It was a big old house that was made into small apartments. Randal, his wife Mercy and their daughter Merry stayed in one of the apartments upstairs. It was a small apartment but it was everything Randal's family needed. They were safe and warm. Randal's wife Mercy was like Mother earth. Mercy made all her own bread and sold the extra loaves for money. Max knocked on the door and Mercy yelled for him to come in. As soon as Max walked in he could smell the homemade bread. It smelled heavenly. Mercy was standing at the kitchen counter. Max gave her a hug and asked where Randal was? She pointed toward the bedroom. He walked over by the door and said Randal's name. He heard Randal get up off the bed and he watched him walk into the living room and sit down on the couch. He motioned for Max to take a seat. Mercy came in and gave them each a cup of tea. Max took a sip and it was actually very good. He could taste a hint of cinnamon. Where did Mercy get cinnamon?

A plan of action

Max filled Randal in on what had been going on. He shared the contents of Danielle's note and the fact that he only had a week before she wanted him on the farm. Max told Randal the whole story from beginning to end about Bobby and his mom Melissa. During their conversation Mercy came in the room and sat down at an old singer sewing machine. She had some material on the cabinet. This woman was so talented. Randal was lucky to have Mercy for his wife. Max continued to talk to Randal about his dilemma. When he was done explaining the situation he sat back and looked at Randal. Max asked Randal if he could help him come up with a plan of action? Randal asked Max to give him a couple days to try to get in touch with his brother-in-law.

Randal and Mercy's daughter

While Randal and Max were sitting on the couch his daughter Merry came into the room. She walked over to a small table in the corner of the room. She sat down to work on a puzzle. It looked like a big puzzle. One of those puzzles that had at least 1500 pieces. It would keep her busy for quite some time. Merry was a beautiful girl. Max felt bad that she had to live through this war.

Returning to the rooming house

Max thanked Randal in advance for any help he could give. They shook hands at the door and said their goodbyes. Max made it home in time to help Miss Renee clean up the dinner dishes. He scrubbed the pots and dried all the dishes. While he was cleaning he told Miss Renee that Randal would try to find a way to get Bobby to see his mom. If there was any luck at all Bobby would visit with his mom and Max would be with Danielle.

Danielle

When Max went upstairs to bed he pulled Danielle's note out of his pocket. This was the fifth time he'd read it since Sam gave it to him. He loved her more than anything. He wanted to make her wishes come true. He fell asleep with her note in his hand.

Randal behind the scene

While Max was home sleeping Randal had left home and walked the 5 blocks to his brother-in-law's house. He stayed in a small apartment on the east side. Max had to wait a considerable time before James made it home. He always got a ride with one of the army recruiters. It was the only way to get around. The recruiters had 4 wheel drive jeeps that drove through unplowed streets. Randal went inside and waited till his brother-in-law changed out of his work clothes. They sat down and had a beer together. Randal told him about Melissa, Bobby, Max and Miss Renee. He told him of the dilemma and asked if he could find a way for Bobby to see his mom at the hospital? James said he could definitely help. It might take a little maneuvering but he had a buddy that could pick Bobby, Miss Renee and Max up and take them to the Army hospital. By the time Randal left his brother-in-law's apartment he felt that he had solved at least one of Max's problems. Randal couldn't help him with getting out to the farm but at least he could help with Bobby. He walked home and made it there before midnight. Mercy was thankful he was home safe.

I understand there is a war and the reason for the army trucks but I don't understand why Max and Danielle and all these people are living as if nothing has happened.

Carol, actually there whole lives have been changed. There homes are gone and they are living in small apartments in old buildings. They only way to get food is from whatever the army supply trucks deliver. It's like food lines during the depression. There's no gas so people walk wherever they have to go. The only place there is gas is on the army base. Then add the weather and that adds a lot of problems. Although I will say spring is on the way. These people are very strong determined people. They will survive. The best part about all of these people is that they are willing to help people in need.

I think that is what amazes me after a disaster, the way the people come together and help each other. I live in a community like that. Last summer I was re-roofing the south part of my house and in no time there were neighbors up on the roof with me, hammers in hand. I think if something like you describe in your story that we will see everything you have described here...Its what we do.

Heart warming to see everyone chipping in to help each other; what a world it will be if this basic human instinct prevails without borders. Thanks Nancy - siva
