Loving the Middle East

Many people think it is dry land...a hell on earth...but if you lived here for 8 years, it is your land of milk and honey.

Perhaps, the Middle East is not a favorite tourist destination, not even an ideal employment venue. The hotness scale is just beyond imagination especially in the Summer, where even the locales themselves fly to cooler countries for a break.

Living in the Middle East for eight years now has somehow led me to the conclusion that it's not that bad after all. In my early years, I used to hate this land. Especially if you suddenly lost your job, and you have to go for interviews in the middle of the heat; or suddenly your boss asks you to go for an errand in the middle of the day...

During August, your enemy is not the blazing heat anymore. It is the humid weather which literally drains you and dehydrates your system. Have you experienced having a "steam bath"? Make it 10xx hotter and that's humid. The minute you step out of your air conditioned spot, within 5 minutes you will be sweating from head to toe.

Sweating is okay but having difficulty breathing, your strength draining, and fluids from your body seem to be drying up...add to that some migraine starts building up...that's totally uncool and uncomfy! Some people poorly surrender to heat stroke, especially the labor workers. Add to that, it also coincided with Ramadan and they have no food nor water in the body. Only the tougher survive.

Regardless of those, I have learned to love this land. The people are kind and friendly, the opportunities are greener and not as dry as its weather. You can work at any job here with or without a diploma. Most people consider themselves 'lucky' to find themselves on a much better position despite having no college diploma. This is something that is not easy with our own country. Competition is more tough. Standard for hiring is more difficult. There you have to survive. Here you can get yourself on the top.

Anyway, there's no such thing as a perfect place on earth. If you think working or living in Europe and other wealthier countries is easier...well, not really. Ask some people anyway. It's not bed and roses for them. We all have different struggles and it's not a matter of where you are. Blessings and happiness are already delivered by the good Lord. We just have to learn how to take advantage of them and to walk a life of obedience and purpose.

Love is a choice. Whether you are in the Middle east or not, in pain or okay, decide to love.
