Make our Lives Worthwhile

When we take others for granted, become insensitive to their beliefs, culture and feelings we repeat past mistakes. We never learn the lessons as we expect different results while repeating the wrong actions. Time to turn a new leaf. Technology is no substitute for empathy and understanding.

Contributions from past Generations

Each generation inherits the earth and now the possibilities are much more. We not only learn from earlier generations’ mistakes but also benefit from their sacrifices and knowledge. Though they might have depleted few resources, they have left in tact most to last for generations to come. What we have, including the glitzy gadgets that we change like our dress, are also the fruits of their labor. It is just not right to treat them less talented as they cleared the rough terrain for us to build on, enjoy, laid the foundations through dint of hard work. Hopefully, we are also doing the same for those yet to come – not making things difficult by leaving toxicity, knowingly or otherwise! Not living off the capital even; a terrible karma indeed!

Make wise Choices

Many things change but some values are eternal. When we forget them, they revisit us with a vengeance sooner than later. But aren’t we human and easily led astray? We seem to have everything in abundance provided we can afford them. Then again, if everyone can afford them, can we meet our insatiable appetites? We might be, but that will also mean a reckless ride to ruin. The best way is we need not only to work for what we desire but also ponder the need for them – look also at the alternatives in terms of time and resources; then make wise choices.

Forgetting the Basics

Individually we make choices and also collectively. We have certain goals and limited time to achieve them. Again, what we want also depends on our whims that may change over time; those that appeal at certain age may not later. Material possessions are always a lure for most that trumps reason. But aren’t certain values above them? We may lose track of them but they should never be forgotten.

Time with Family

All progress will ring hollow if we have no time to spend with our loved ones. Time is becoming the biggest casualty as we are becoming self-centered due to our obsession with gargets and technology. They not only keep us occupied by their superficial lure but also the need to have the means to buy the latest. Many pay a high price in terms of family life that they realize too late.

Justice and Fair Play

A just society is a basic for a fulfilling life. No one can live in an island forever. If society is not just with everyone having a role, meaningful part, we disintegrate. All will pay the price. Income inequality is everywhere but the super-rich feel they are entitled to more! Capitalism has blurred the distinction between growth and greed. When greed takes over, justice and fair play are on their back foot, even forgotten!

Purpose and Focus to our Lives

When we read the news headlines, one cannot but see the lack of focus in our lives. Our old enemy is alive and kicking; poking our nose into others’ lives rather than let sleeping tigers lie. Raking up issues that are sensitive, opening closed wounds is no way to live in peace. Individually, we might let slip words and the damage is done as we cannot take them back! But as countries too, our leaders get carried away when playing to their political gallery, emotions take over and rule roost over vast swathes of people, creating enemies where there were none on issues ignored for years. That is indeed a wrong purpose and focus to our lives; inviting trouble, and we are gain back to square one!

Avoid the Wrong Path

Challenging issues will always be there as long as we have minds of our own. But we should stop taking others for granted, and force our views down their throats however appealing they may be to us. The violent reaction that we see often is when few are pushed to the wall and in alien terrain. We need to let go, let others live their lives as along as they mind their business – like Muammar Gaddafi and few others did! They became leaders for a purpose, men of their times who knew the pulse of their people.

Very good article. But, I wonder, do we learn from our past? One can only hope.

Thanks Christine. Relationships between individuals have to be nurtured. Unless we can agree to disagree, we should leave out controversial subjects. There are countries that are at each other's throats for generations. The silent majority wants to live in peace but politicians keep the issues alive. I feel we should look ahead as one humanity than highlight differences in terms of religion, color etc. That brings disaster - lessons from past - siva

Thanks Karim for such kind words. Aren't the big powers creating issues where there were none? Why not spend the excess energy and time positively to benefit humanity? Other species can take care of themselves! Every action has an equal reaction! siva

Got your philosophical point of view, and agreed. I also believe in destiny too, which you might have some other view, I'm sure.

Thanks Karim. When we think and act in a particular way we get the attention of people who think similarly. Like now, China and Japan are at each other's throats. Better that such energy is expended to find common ground and reach an agreement where there are disputes. Why have a war and kill mostly innocent people and then sign a piece of paper for peace? siva

HISTORY MUST REPEAT ITSELF
COME WHAT MAY
and so its the only way except the mode of transportation changes
from cycle to a jet......

Thanks Loverme for the interesting comments. I am reminded of the saying attributed to Einstein - insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results. Isn't time we changed our way of thinking and doing? siva

Great thought, Siva. You have pointed out the importance of spending time with the family. It is a pity that many of us neglect this aspect or are not having the time in the rat race they are in.

I tell my younger friends that time spent with children when they are impressionable and yearning for our love and attention is rather short. It will never come back. And then, one should never forget our life partner! Then of course, our parents - the shared moments are precious! Thanks Pradeep for taking time to read and respond - siva

Thanks Vartika for your comments. Now China & Japan are baying for each other's blood. Is it going to be 100 million dead after six months of war and a piece of paper signed for peace after that. Who suffers;, the poorest from both countries! siva

Thanks James for such appreciation. I am getting tired of wars that serve no purpose. A peace agreement after 100 million deaths? That is what it will be after what is likely to happen if better sense does not prevail between China and Japan. Brinkmanship to satisfy ego of few mortal men! siva
