Short story about Army Recruitment in the early 1900's

Medlicott becomes 'Maps'

“Medlicott is it?”

“Yes sir” replied the tall, handsome, bespectacled, hopeful.

“Ever Flown before young man?”

“Yes sir, 32 Hours in Farmans”

“Excellent, Excellent”, barely looking at the man before him the uniformed officer with a gruff voice seemed entirely content to bury his head in the papers before him.

“Any Cross-Country?”

“Yes Sir, mostly in the midlands” the young man added for effect.

“I asked you IF not WHERE” the officer scolded.

“Cross Country heh!, that good” he scribbled more onto the blackening paper.

“Where?”

“Midlands Sir”, the young man repeated.

“Good”, was the curt reply. Suddenly the officer looked up. “School?”

“Yes sir”, the student thought to add a name but rememberred the scolding for offering more information than was asked for.

“Well Man?” a pause for effect. “Where Man Where?”

“Wellesbourne sir”

“Wellesbourne? surprised you even found your way to the smoke!” His gaze returned to the papers. Grasping a large inked stamp, he permanently marked Medlicotts’ papers ..NAVIGATOR.
