Buddha urged us to take a middle path and accept suffering as part and parcel of life. Have we made progress to find a way out of this vicious cycle? It is time we got our priorities right.

At the Crossroads

We are not near a solution to what Buddha realized and taught over two thousand years ago. In fact, we tend to accept our lives as a foregone conclusion; that suffering is part and parcel of our lives and we can do nothing about it. We catch few moments of respite even through escapism and then endure what life has to offer based on the paths we take and follow as inalienable. Some lives are expendable as long as it is not ours! We preach to others what we do not practice or set an example for them to follow. Even countries have huge ego and pride, and people are made to sacrifice lives to satisfy them. We also take up cudgels on behalf of our Gods and willing to kill others who are just like us, even new-born is not exempted! And we get so worked up for no reason. To love one another is difficult but hate comes easy. In effect, we have made no progress on the essentials of coexistence and inclusiveness from time immemorial. We accept that history is bound to repeat ad nauseam and we are powerless to alter our course. All great leaders are past – but they attain greatness only after death!

Becoming More Selfish?

We are made aware that balance and middle path are what leads to a fulfilling life. We live within a society based on give and take. Obsessive addiction to any cause is not for the majority. Scientists can invest all their energy for the common good of mankind but power and wealth by themselves go before a certain fall. We are just sowing seeds of destruction down the line thereby. Selfish pursuits will bring us grief and plant seeds of discord. Denying others their due leaves a pall of gloom all around and a bitter taste in the mouth. However, some go Scot-free in a material world but their lives are lifted to stratosphere by media. No one bothers to take stock of how they made it and most lead lives far from worthy of emulation, but they are lionized. So we are like children from the Pied Piper of Hamelin – led as sheep or donkeys following a path without much thought.

Science & Technology

We are enamored of the march of science and technology. It captivates our mind almost like a thing of beauty is a joy forever though they prove fleeting. It is like a playboy ever looking for the next lovely lass to captivate him. But they cut both ways like humans are wont to do. What is progress can be used for destruction – classic duality of creation at play. We need to make a wise choice and carry others along that path but that has proved elusive right through. We are getting more afraid of our own shadows as the days roll by. Science is captivating with endless possibilities – what we dream of now are realities down the line. If our forefathers see us talking across the globe wirelessly they will react – you should be joking! When we produce electricity without depending on grid few decades later it will be taken as just par for the course! Or when we travel inter-planet still searching for the elusive God! Is He not everywhere including within us?

Making Sense

How to make sense of our existence, purpose of life? Can we find common ground? Yes, our existence and well-being are being challenged increasingly. We have to come to the realization that we swim or sink as one – so no option but to pursue common dreams, but are not our dreams common? We should make progress to benefit all than in isolation. We pool our resources together than hide our Weapons of Mass Destruction and waste precious resources to protect us from one another. There are always some black sheep, even within families, but they need just the right touch and nudge to feel counted. Countries too need the reassurances that they too are part of the world community. Even followers of different faiths should be left free provided they do likewise. All follow the same goal but may take different paths.

Future Beckons

When we make the right assessment of the paths we had taken and ponder over the pitfalls that have put paid to our progress we have made a good foundation. Let us build a better future and that itself is the reward as co-creators lending our shoulders to the wheel of creation that knows no respite. Our planet is living every moment and soon we can reach out to stars, explore what we know and the unknowns, but be prepared for surprises along the way. Our Creator has presented us with endless possibilities to keep us on the edge. We solve one puzzle after another yet many more unravel! Enjoy the beauty of creation as we also are part of it. And face the unknown future with a take that we have done our best within our abilities that are also expanding with each passing generation. Eons to go, so why sputter to a stop much before our time? Being at the apex of all species it is time we realized our true potential and also the responsibilities that go with it. We have now more global awareness with the march of time. Are we up to it or end up with feet of clay needling each other, thereby hastening our demise?

One of the Institutions that I studied in has the Motto: "Nec Dextrorsum, Nec Sinistrorsum", Latin for "Neither to the Right Nor to the Left"
I live by it along with Loyalty and Service and Let Your Light Shine as you rise as the Phoenix.
Its just who and what I am because of my family and well-wishers.

Thank you Jami, the shift in consciousness is overdue. Time to let go past baggage. Despite globalization and being aware that we all yearn for peace, we still hoard Weapons of Mass Destruction. Unless we make progress towards coexistence we will never enjoy peace and peace of mind. Sadly, we prove we are our own worst enemy - siva

Siva, I love the picture "The Future Beckons" it is truly magnificent. We live in a world with so much evil. I've seen it throughout my life. To this day I think I understand evil more than I understand good. That seems strange doesn't it. That is why I write uplifting stories. I like to calm peoples spirits and make them smile. It's comforting to me too. I wish we were all surrounded with love and peace. Instead we hear of terrible things going on around the globe or even in our own cities. It is so sad but I still say the universe will guide us to where we are supposed to be. If we have faith and love we are very fortunate. Many people don't have this and that is very sad.

Thank you Nancy for your input and for speaking out. We have to be ever on the guard against some who are out to spoil everything that our efforts and nature provide us. And being emotional we get manipulated by them easily. That has started even world wars. What use fighting for a piece of land when the whole universe belongs to each one of us? What use getting restricted by beliefs when we can embrace the best of everything? After all there is only one Creator.

We need to speak out and highlight injustices to restrict the evil and stop them on their tracks. Slowly the message will get across. Sadly, democracy and freedom is practiced to such an extent that they border on anarchy. If there is no rule of law only the evil benefits. The majority good will then get shortchanged.

I feel that we are near to the gates of a shift in consciousness but we have to give ourselves a nudge to take the final passage - siva

Thanks again Nancy. We all think alike and believe in coexistence based on give and take, but we get afraid of own shadows to accumulate so much of weapons to annihilate all life. The cold war is over and China is willing to play ball but few still sow suspicion. Look at the telephone tapping controversy that has raised temperatures even among friends. These play spoil sport and act as the slip between the cup and the lip. When I talk to people around me they agree but feel helpless to act. I tell the young to take charge than blame same old leaders but they cannot cooperate among themselves, so the silent majority always lose out - siva

Siva, I just had a fantastic thought. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could all put aside the negativity that is pushed on us and think only of ways to make each others lives better. When I say each other I mean people from around the whole world. We should accept everyone for whoever they are and not try to make them different and live in peace together.

Yes Nancy, that way we get peace of mind and even bliss, not the way we live now being suspicious of others. We have to let go the past injustices, even perceived ones, and not try to get even all the time.

It is tough with present outlook as we have endless tides of hate everywhere. We do try to change individually, but we face a tough wall collectively. That wall has to come down through a shift in consciousness. Petty differences prop up the wall now - siva

Siva, in the world we live in today there are so many different religions and everyone believes their religion is the right one. If we could all accept each others beliefs and know that it's all about love, kindness and faith and not put anything else in to peoples beliefs maybe and I say maybe we could turn things around and there would be peace. That would be a very big lesson for all.

I have to thank you again Nancy for your further comments, most welcome. I studied in Christian and Muslim institutions. I have lived in Muslim countries and have friends of all faith. I feel comfortable to have good fun - like my friend confided of his apprehension - what use reaching heaven when "funny" people cannot get there!

I have no boundaries at all by way of religion, nationality, color, gender or wealth - I know it is easier to borrow from a poor person! Everyone wants to be counted but feel afraid to show emotion. Love does not cost anything and smile is the freest gift but we are miserly with it.

We all have our own lives to live so we should stop meddling in others' lives. Setting a good example is what leaves an indelible impression. When in need we do not know who will spring to our help or whose blood will save us. So we are all same in every way - cast away artificial borders and then the window to bliss will swing open - siva

Thanks Nancy for such touching words, I feel honored. I see all as just the same. Life is fair - the poor have nothing to fear, easily satisfied. They can squeeze blood out of stone. The wealthy feel insecure and do not trust even their shadow! The poor tends to be happy thinking of becoming rich but the rich have nightmares of becoming poor! For me I am comfortable anywhere but would like to stay rooted to the ground, staying natural every way. That is pure bliss. When we have no big aspirations there are no disappointments too and ready to leave without looking back, any moment! siva

Gandhi was preoccupied by the freedom movement with least amount of casualties while Jesus had a different agenda. Whatever paths we take let them be filled with love for others irrespective of artificial borders as there is only one Creator. "All follow the same goal but may take different paths."

Is the reverse of this also a posssibilty?

All follow the same path, but some may have different goals, or perspectives of it.

All paths lead to the same goal in the end. Every goal takes us further along the same path.

The infinite number of different paths within oneness are really all the same path.

Points to ponder.Spirited. I feel we will end up at the same destination but none has come back to tell the tale! Even Mother Teresa had her doubts, it seems! Some, like me, try to do good, help others, give more than take as that is the right way to live. The conscience within us guides us and when in doubt - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I see some more ritualistic, following their beliefs to a T. I like to be with those who are just helpful in whatever way with a positive attitude, spreading some cheer; we also know those who do the opposite, we feel sick in the pit of the stomach after spending some time with them with their attitude. So I believe the goal is same to lead a virtuous life - to be useful members of society - siva

Dear Siva
This is a really thought-provoking subject and there would be, I’m sure, as many opinions as there are people in this world.

The Eight Fold or Middle Path advocated by Buddha is naturally and logically the ideal path everyone should take. He advises us to take the middle way rather than either extreme.

However, I always ask myself whether, in the present modern world, it’s easy for one to adopt this ideal, except perhaps for a few among us. This is because people, by virtue of circumstances, get caught up in extreme dichotomies. For example whether to love or hate are two polarised extremes and few are able to take the middle ground. To many people a middle ground may therefore be illogical for various reasons. The way out does not look obvious to a person caught in such a polarity.

If everybody can adopt a Middle Path attitude towards life and towards other people it would be certainly ideal, but is that attainable or sustainable in practical terms?

Thanks dear Subra for your comments and input. Striving for a middle path is ideal for most to lead a balanced life. Few take wealth creation as an end by itself and lose themselves by the attention they get as having "arrived". But I salute the scientists whose efforts benefit all of humanity - they have to be single minded in their pursuits. But majority wants peace of mind and a loving family and for that the middle path serves best. Greed and selfishness divide our society - siva
