Max went out to help the flood victims and ended up hurt and missing. He was found by some volunteers that transported him to the Red Cross tent. He was then transferred to the hospital. He is in a coma. As soon as Danielle got word of where he was she had Jake the farm hand take her to his side.

Medical facility

Danielle was sitting by Max's side in intensive care. She was worried sick about him. She would caress his hand as carefully as she could without moving any of the tubes that were connected to his body. He looked like he was sleeping but the doctor said he was in a coma. It was very serious and their only hope was that he would come out of it by himself. Danielle spoke softly to him and told him how much she loved him. Jake was in the waiting room in case he was needed. He sat in one of the chairs facing the television. The news was on and the broadcaster was talking about the flood. The waters were starting to go down but it would take time before things got back to normal. Jake was exhausted. There was a coffee pot over in the corner and he was going to get some coffee to keep him awake.

Danielle's decision

It was almost 5 o'clock when Danielle came out of intensive care. The nurses had been very kind to her. She just didn't have it in her to go home. She was going to stay with Jake as long as it took for him to wake up. She walked into the waiting room and Jake was sound asleep sitting up in the chair. He had a coffee cup in his hand. Danielle walked over and took the coffee cup and set it on the table. She touched Jake lightly on the shoulder to wake him up. It startled him and he jumped. Then he saw Danielle. She told him that she wasn't going to go home. The nurses were kind enough to give her a small room that was never used. They were going to put a cot in it for her. She needed Jake to go home and watch over the farm. She made a list of things for him to bring to her tomorrow. Until then she would make do with what she had. She explained to Jake that she simply could not leave Max. He understood completely and gave her a hug before he left. The sun was going down when Jake walked out of the hospital he felt a chill. The temperatures were dropping.

The Farm

Jake made it home before dark and went into the farmhouse to get the items Danielle wanted. He felt kind of funny going through her clothes but that's what she told him to do. In emergency situations you did what you had too. He packed a bag with clothes and toiletries in it and put $20 of his own money in the bag in case Danielle needed something. She was strong willed and would survive whatever crossed her path.

Exhaustion

Danielle was exhausted and laid down on the cot and fell asleep instantly. She'd been through a lot over the last few days and she needed to sleep. When she woke up she didn't know where she was. Then it all came back to her. She looked out the window and it was near dawn. Danielle needed some coffee and she went in search of some. There was a pot near the nurses station. The hot coffee was wonderful. She spoke with the nurse at the desk and asked if Max had shown any signs of improvement.

Signs

The nurse told Danielle that Max had begun stirring about 5 a.m. and showed signs that he was aware of what was going on. He opened his eyes once but then closed them again. Danielle was delighted. It would be a God send for him to wake up. She walked into intensive care to see Max. She walked over and said good morning just like he could hear her. The doctor had told her yesterday to talk to Max. He said there was a possibility that he could hear her.

A gift from God

Danielle walked to the side of Max's bed and bent down to give him a kiss. Max opened his eyes. The nurse was standing on one side of the bed and Danielle was on the other side. The nurse walked over and pushed a button on the wall. The doctor on call came into the room. Max tried to smile at Danielle but it was a little crooked smile but it was definitely a smile. Danielle's heart leaped for joy. Max was awake.

We all willed Max to wake up more for Danielle than for anyone else. We should not also lose people like Max who are needed in this world to show how we should live our lives - by helping others. Thanks Nancy, for keeping us in good spirits too - siva

Siva, thank you so much for the awesome comment. I love Max. He represents the good in mankind and I think with love so many people could be like him. Yesterday I watched Steve Harvey and he had a Mother's Day show and he said that love can make such a difference. I think it's so true. Blessings to you today.
