Missions Accomplished for 2011

In late 2010, I promised myself to accomplish things for 2011. I did not make a specific list, instead I thought of doing something that may touch some people's lives in one way or another. As the year 2011 comes to an end, I am proud to say that my missions have been accomplished.

Clothes for the Poor

In mid-2010, our new house was built. In preparation for our move, I discovered that we had plenty of clothes that were slightly used, and were no longer being worn. I realized that there are needy people in the community who would benefit if these clothes were given away. So, in January of 2011, we packed them in boxes and sent them to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, an organization that provides food, clothing, shelter, and other services to people in need. We were able to give away clothes, shoes, socks, gloves, scarves, and other items that are necessary for everyday need.

Financial Aid to Earthquake Victims

Last March, there was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the town of Christchurch in New Zealand. I thought, this would be a good opportunity to provide financial help to the victims. The town was devastated and even a meager amount of financial support will surely go a long way. Every little help will sum up to something substantial if combined.

Stamp Out the Hunger

Each year in May, Campbell Soup co-sponsors with National Association of Letter Carriers to stamp out the hunger in America. This is the time when a food drive is established to help provide assistance to Americans who are struggling to put food on their tables everyday. Held only one day a year, 230,000 letter carriers collect food items as they deliver letters. To participate in this drive, everyone is encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing canned goods, pasta, cereal, and other non-perishable items next to their mailboxes prior to the regular mail delivery on a scheduled food drive event. Collected items are then transported to Feeding America affiliated food banks and other relief organizations that serve more than 10,000 communities.

So, as soon as this food drive was advertised in April, I made sure that our pantry shelf was stocked with food items so we could participate in this worthwhile cause.

Volunteer Work

Just recently, I donated my time volunteering for Winter Hospitality Overflow (WHO), preparing hot meals, serving food, distributing toiletries and bedding materials to the homeless. WHO is an organization that helps provide shelter to the homeless during the winter time. Because of conflict of time with my work, I did my volunteering at night and I had to stay awake for at least 3 hours.

Relief Goods for Typhoon Victims in the Philippines

There was a recent calamity that occurred in my country, Philippines. Through the help of the Filipino-American Association, I was able to donate some items for the victims of Typhoon Sendong. The association has collected relief goods from a number of people who are so eager to help. These items will soon be shipped to the Philippines. It is good to know that in times like this, there are still so many people who are willing to help. According to KHON 2, as of December 26th, death toll has climbed up to 1, 200 people and more than 60,000 are homeless.

As the year 2011 comes to an end, I feel good that in my own little way, I was able to touch people's lives, make a change, and support some worthwhile causes. Right now, I am getting ready for the year 2012 and do the same... lend a helping hand to those who are in need.
