There was a murder on the beach and Dad has volunteered his services. Molly can't believe it and Milly wants to go home. The temperatures are heating up and the sharks are swimming.

An early morning swim

Mom wants to go swimming and the children are still sleeping. Milly won't leave the house and Molly wants nothing to do with the sharks. Mom tries to wake Dad up but it's not working. The heat wore him out yesterday and he's tired. Mom decides to venture out on the beach by herself. Molly doesn't approve but she can't stop mom. Mom put on her bathing suit and quietly shut the door. Molly watched from the living room window.

The sharks in the water

Molly is watching out the window as mom puts one of her feet in the water. She must be testing the water. Molly had seen people do that before. Mom waded out knee deep in the water. Molly was still watching and from where she was sitting she could see a shark far off in the distance. Molly squinted her eyes but that was definitely a shark. She didn't know how to warn mom. Mom was now taking a leisurely swim. This was not good. That shark could hurt mom. Molly didn't know what to do. The next thing she knew there was a guy on the beach blowing a whistle. Mom must have heard because Molly saw her turn around and come back to the beach. What Molly didn't realize was that people were always watching for sharks. The whistles were their way to warn people to get out of the water. Molly was so thankful that mom came back to the beach. By the time Mom got out of the water the shark was gone. That was just a little too close for comfort. Molly wasn't going to tell Milly what just happened because she would demand to go home immediately. When mom came back Molly noticed that she never mentioned the shark to Dad. It's a good thing Molly had been keeping a close eye or she wouldn't have seen the shark and would have been none the wiser.

Dad watches the ferry

Dad agreed to meet the detective in charge of the murder investigation. His appointment was just before noon so he showered, shaved and ate a quick breakfast. Dad made it clear he was going to the meeting alone. He gave mom a quick kiss and out the door he went. On his way to his meeting he saw a ferry in the water. It was very impressive. It was bigger than what Dad thought it would be. Dad watched the ferry for longer than what he anticipated and ended up being a little late for his appointment. The detective was waiting for him and invited him into his office. Dad had to smile when he sat down across from the detective. There was a picture of the detective holding a very large fish. He was smiling in the picture. The detective obviously liked to fish. Dad thought maybe they could become friends and they could go fishing together.

The details of the murder

The detective filled Dad in on what they knew so far. The victim had actually been in the volleyball tournament. He was on one of the other teams but when Dad saw the picture he remembered the guy. It was the guy that acted very agitated during the game. He was a big guy and according to the officer he'd been shot near the volleyball court. The investigation up to this point gave them very few leads. The victim had no relatives in the area. He was on vacation with a group of friends. They were staying in one of the rentals on the beach.

Another adventure and challenge for Dad but Molly and even Milly have to back up. Taking another life is what we do when we cease to have other options, sadly.

Thanks Nancy for keeping us on the edge - siva
