Dad, Molly and Milly are on their way home from downtown. Dad interviewed the first neighbor of the murder victim but nothing much came from that interview. Dad did get a parking ticket though and he was not happy about that. Milly was happy they were going home. That was where she felt safest.

Arriving home

Just as they pulled into the driveway a monsoon rainstorm let loose and the rain started coming down in buckets. They all had to make a mad dash for the house. Milly had short legs so she got the wettest but truthfully they were all drenched. Mom went and got towels to dry everyone off. Dad went upstairs to change his clothes. Milly didn't care if she was wet or not she was just happy to be home. Molly could hear the rain as it pelted the windows. It seemed like this was the kind of rain that was going to last all day long.

After lunch

Mom made an excellent lunch and when dad was done eating he told Molly and Milly that everyone was staying home for the rest of the day. Milly was very happy but Molly really hoped that they could go on a few more interviews. At about 3:00 the phone rang and it was for Dad. Molly ran to the back room to listen in on the call. It was the neighbor that had cancelled on Dad this morning. She worked at the Natural History Museum and asked if Dad could meet her there. Dad had planned to stay home but agreed to meet her at 5:00. Molly overheard Dad say that he was pretty sure that they wouldn't let Molly or Milly into the museum so he was going to leave them at home. Molly thought about it for about a second and she made up her mind that she was going. It was just not acceptable to leave one of the main investigators on the sidelines. That was unheard of in this line of work. She would find a way to get into the car. She could outsmart Dad. There was no doubt about it.

The Interview at the History Museum

At 4:00 p.m. Dad went out to start the car. When he came back in to get his paperwork Molly ran out the front door and waited behind the car. When Dad opened up the door she made a mad dash for the front seat. There was a few unkind words and then Dad gave up because Molly wouldn't budge. When Dad got angry Molly would ride in the back and act like she didn't hear what he was saying. She had made up her mind that she was going. He wasn't leaving her behind on an important case like this. Molly was the brains of this team and she really needed to listen in on the interview. When they got to the museum Dad parked the car and put some money in the parking meter. Then he told Molly to stay close to him. His only hope was that nobody noticed that he had a dog with him.

The neighbor's interview

Molly stayed as close to Dad as she could. They made it in the building without anyone paying a bit of attention to them. They walked passed the room with the dinosaurs and Molly was ready to go home. What were those big things. This wasn't even funny. If one of those dinosaurs came alive they'd kill Dad and her in a flash. It was a good thing Milly wasn't here because a sight like that would finish her off. They went up the escalator to the 3rd floor. Dad found the neighbor right where she said she'd be. She was setting up a display in a room off one of the main galleries. Dad asked her a few questions and one of her answers made Molly's ears stand up. She said that the night of the murder she had seen another neighbor go into the victim's apartment. She didn't know his name but she could point him out. She'd seen him around the building a few times. This told Molly that the murderer lived in the building just as she'd suspected and it was a male. Now they were on to something. They had someone to look for. This had been a very worthwhile interview. Molly was starting to get tired. It had been a long day.

Driving home

Molly was sitting in the front seat looking out the window. She couldn't help but notice how beautiful the city was a dusk. Dad was very quiet and Molly was going over what they learned in the interview. The puzzle pieces were starting to come together. It shouldn't take too long to come up with a suspect.

Molly cannot wait to take a pound of flesh from the suspect as soon as she sees him! Good that Molly is more than volunteering in this case - in fact, she is the real deal. Thanks Nancy for this lovely story - siva
