Today is a new day. It's raining and the sky is dark. Milly and Dad are asleep upstairs. Yesterday Dad got a phone call and Milly didn't listen because Dad had the back room locked. That just happens to be where Molly listened in on all Dad's calls. She's now searching for clues in his office.

Dad's office

When Molly realized that Dad was still sleeping she decided this would be a good time to snoop around his desk. It was always a mess with papers everywhere but he did keep one drawer locked. Molly had her small tool set with her and she knew she could unlock the drawer with very little effort on her part. Dad wouldn't like it but he knew the consequences of keeping clues from her. She was an important part of this investigation and Dad really should keep that in mind when he hid clues from her.

Dad's notebook

She had the drawer opened in no time at all. She had to do this quickly before Dad came in and started yelling. Zoey planned to search each page of his notebook until she found the latest clues. The one thing that was good about Dad was that he dated each clue as it came in. That would make finding the newest clue a breeze. Molly had an idea and maybe once she found the clue she could put two and two together.

Discovery

Molly was searching through Dad's notebook and came across just exactly what she was looking for. The lady at the front desk was a wonderful person but what if she had a family member that had access to the storage room and in turn the secret passageway. Dad's notes made reference to a nephew that had come to stay for the summer. Molly had only seen him once but he was staying with his aunt and uncle. To top it off according to Dad's notes he had a criminal background. A light bulb went off in Molly's head. That was an expression she used when she made a discovery. The apartment complex was big and someone could go unnoticed into a storage room. He could have found the key in his aunt's office. As Molly continued to read Dad's notes she discovered that he had arrived at the same conclusion. This case could be wrapped up if Dad worked fast before the nephew left to go overseas. If the nephew left the country it would be much harder to track him down. Molly wasn't sure what the nephew hid in the apartment but he was pretty sure he'd been in the apartment when the victim arrived home.

Going back to New York City

As soon as Dad got up he was on the move. He didn't even stop to eat breakfast. Mom had food on the table but Dad just put on his jacket and was out the door. Molly ran out the door dragging Milly by the collar. Milly didn't want to leave home. She wanted to stay with mom. Why did Molly always have to include her in these investigations. She'd made it quite clear she didn't want to be involved. She didn't even know where they were going. Molly and Milly were in the back seat before Dad could say no. They were buckled in and ready to go. Milly looked at the front door as Dad pulled out of the driveway. Mom was waving goodbye. Milly felt like jumping out the window and running back to mom. The next thing she knew they were on the freeway and it was still raining which meant the roads were slick.

New York City

While they were on the freeway Milly kept her eyes shut. She couldn't take the constant changing of lanes and the fender benders they dodged minute by minute. They made it to the apartment complex in record time. Molly noticed that Dad had his phone with him. He was probably going to call for backup.

Thanks Nancy for keeping it gripping. Is Zoey too chipping in?

Molly is caught in between Dad who tries to shake her off while Milly too in a like way but for the opposite reason!

Maybe Dad knows Molly can deliver the coup de grâce! siva

Siva, thank you so much for the awesome comment. I'll be sad when this story is complete but I will begin another one. I just got my first revision on Zoey back from my publisher. Now I'm on to my next step. They actually love her so I'm happy about that. The one thing I will say is writing is a lot of work.

Yes, Dad is leaving too many clues for Molly to find. But that is the way things break out eventually I suppose. Nice work Nancy.

Great story- may be you can also find a publishing house and bring out this series in print. And please do not keep the price high :)
