Dad and Molly are being taken to the hospital for treatment. Milly jumped in the rescue squad just before the door shut. Milly refused to be left behind.

Arriving at the emergency room

The rescue team rushed Dad and Molly into the emergency room. Milly was running right beside them. It was a feat to keep up with everyone. The guys had long legs and Milly was running as fast as she could to keep up. This was entirely too much commotion for Milly. There were doctors waiting when they arrived. Milly overheard one of the doctors say they were going to have to take Dad to the operating room. They had to get the bullet out of his arm. Molly was laying quietly on the bed. She told Milly she had a headache. She must have bumped her head when she hit the wall. This was a bad scenario because Dad and Molly were both out of commission and Milly was in charge. Milly didn't know anything about being in charge. She just wanted to go home.

The long wait

It seemed like they had been in emergency forever. Milly heard one of the nurses say they were waiting for an operating room to open up. Milly seriously wondered what that meant. Didn't they always have operating rooms open? One of the nurses was glaring at Molly and Milly. She wanted them to leave the room but Molly was ignoring her and Milly wasn't leaving Molly or Dad for that matter. A policeman came in to interview Dad about the events that took place in the apartment building. Milly heard Dad tell the whole story. As she was listening to what Dad said Milly was amazed that they had survived the whole thing. They were living on the edge and they truly had to start living a normal life like other people. When the policeman finished the interview he left the room and the doctor came in to tell Dad he was going to the operating room. Milly was starting to feel sick. What was she supposed to do once Dad left the room?

A familiar voice.

Milly walked over by the window and could see fire trucks outside. Those guys must be really busy in a big city like New York. Milly wanted to go home to her little house in the suburbs. She'd had enough of the big city for a lifetime or maybe nine lifetimes. Milly heard someone in the hallway outside their tiny room. It was mom! Thankfully mom had arrived to take them home. The nurse that had been glaring at them told mom she had to wait in the waiting room. Mom picked up Molly and Milly and went to the waiting room. As mom walked out of the room Molly turned to the cranky nurse and growled at her. Molly had enough and the nurse just sent her over the edge. There was only so much a dog could take.

The end of the investigation

The police went back to the apartment complex after taking down Dad's statement. They found the lady from the front desk tied up in her apartment along with her husband. There was no sign of her nephew. They told the officers they believed he was headed to the airport to leave town. The lady told the policeman that they would find him with a large bag of money and jewelry. They had just found out that he was breaking into apartments when the occupants weren't home. The night of the murder he followed the passageway up to the victim's apartment and surprised her when she came home. That's why he had to kill her.

The Airport

The police made it to the airport just in time to stop the murderer from getting on a plane. He had a ticket for California. They found the money and jewelry in a large carry on bag. The police arrested him on the spot and took him to the precinct to be booked. The captain told one of his officers that Dad would get the reward money. He sent one of his guys over to the hospital to tell Dad the good news.

Recovery

The doctor came in the waiting room to tell Mom, Molly and Milly that Dad would be fine. He had to be in recovery for a couple hours and they wanted him to spend the night. Milly looked over at mom and she looked relieved. They'd all been worried about Dad. Mom decided the best place for them was at home. Mom thanked the doctor and told Molly and Milly to follow her to the car. Of course Mom had parked in a no parking zone when she arrived at the hospital so there was a ticket on the windshield. Milly felt bad but Mom didn't seem to care. She removed the ticked and they all got in the car for the ride home. It was an uneventful ride because Mom was a much better driver than Dad. They were all so happy when Mom unlocked the door and everyone went inside. Milly went straight to bed and Molly went to get something to eat. She could feel her appetite returning. Another case had been solved. It was all in a day's work.

I hope you have enjoyed this story. I really had a lot of fun writing it. Molly and Milly are so much a part of my life now that I will have to write another story about them and their escapades.

All good things have to end sadly. However, I am happy that every end is also a new beginning! Keep them coming Nancy. They are a terrific team Dad, Molly and the reluctant Milly who proved to be the savior - siva

What a happy ending! Am wondering whether she paid the ticket. Wondering why you have not heard from me? Extensive travel without a decent computer! Much reading, no writing, a little commenting on my favorites...of which you are one!

Stella, thank you for a wonderful comment. I'm so glad that you have followed Molly and Milly. I'm working on a new series with these two and it should be really a fun read. I'm in the middle of doing my first revision for my children's book Zoey the pink dragon. Zoey is one of my favorite characters right along with Molly and Milly. After my revision of Zoey I will send it back to the publisher and they will revise one more time. This is so much work. I do love it though. Once I get through with Zoey and the book is published I think I may work on a children's book with Molly and Milly in it. Blessings to you today and always.

I knew as soon as I finished their story I would have to start writing another one. I started missing them before I even finished the final part.
