A partial poem predicting rain from days gone by. Old wives tales, superstitions and sayings provide a vivid window in our our cultural past.

poem about rain

Old rhymes about weather prediction this one is part of poem predicting rain
If Cattle bellow, grazine from below,
Or if Dogs Entrails rumble to and fro,
Note: How can you possibly see a dogs entrails
If Doves or Pigeons in the Evening come
Note: Well there are pigeons at anytime in Montreal.
Later than usual to their Dove-House Home,
If Crows and Daws do oft themselves be-wet,
Note: Jackdaws to which daws in an archaic term are birds found in parts of Europe.
Or Ants and Pismires Home a-pace do get,
Note: Pismire is an old term for ants.
If in the dust Hens do their Pinions shake,
Note: Pinions are the birds wing.
Or by their flocking a great Number make,
If Swallows fly upon the Water low,
Or Wood-Lice seem in Armies for to go,
If Flies or Gnats, or Fleas infest and bite,
Or sting more than they're wont by Day or Night,
If Toads hie Home, or Frogs do croak amain,
Or Peacocks cry
Soon after look for Rain!

Old wives tales vs scientific weather predictions

Clearly this prediction poem is very old and European. But I think the ants are the only one I might consider. Nevertheless, I will stick with the scientific weather predictions

Yeah, I agree, think I will try and trust the scientific approach, which may often be wrong, but at least I don't have to go looking for any of those critters...LOL
