A poem about morning times years ago. When farms rang or blew horns to call workers for breakfast. Country people slept as a new day began.

Monkshood

[link=

Watched a lesser butcher bird as a little robin sang a robin's song from a branch over bluebells in a wood,
Meadow-saxifrage grew wildly in a cottage garden, lawns dotted beautifully dangerous with fairytale monkshood,
Heard a farmer's maid-servant calling men from across the fields hitting a pail it’s their morning breakfast call,
Some farms they blow a great horn, usually only city farms though, it has to be loud because of the noise an’ all.

Hedgerow Briers

An east wind brings a blue haze called blight it’s the smoke from London who's houses have wood fires,
London’s twenty miles south hazy smoke still visible mixing with winds in fields settling on hedgerow briers,
Looks like it might storm as dark clouds gather, some say thunder turns milk sour, then it starts to pour with rain,
Branches from old fruit trees scattering their blossoms like showers of snow, it seems like winter's here again.

Dewy Calm

Very early in the morning all is soft and dewy calm, about four am all is quiet there’s nothing much going on,
Except the birds and other things rustling in bushes, the odd shot in the far distance that’s another rabbit gone,
Thousands of people live their lives in the country, most not awake yet turn over in their warm soft feather beds,
Birds seem to enjoy their lives at this time, less danger but the slightest noise makes them twist their heads.

Dreaming Dreams

The game keeper with the everlasting gun on his arm is nearly invisible he is after poachers and thieves,
He stalks heaths and fields crosses brown water streams hides in deep woods, hides behind green leaves,
The wagoner has not yet disturbed the silence of the lanes with his shiny brass bells on his jingling teams,
Village urchins the early risers of the human race have still to peep out of cottage doors
they’re still dreaming dreams.
