A true story about a bunch of ladies and their attempt at rescuing a helpless little creature.

Finding the Foundling

After walking my apricot toy poodle and disposing of her aromatic leavings, I noticed that she was nosing around something soft and pink. I looked down and saw a small hairless pink animal; its eyes were still closed and it was perfectly formed. It was laying on the cement walkway, alone and abandoned. It was tiny and helpless. I phoned the concierge to inquire if anyone had a litter of puppies in the building and got a negative response.
I brought it up to my condo where my friends were waiting for me. My friend Helen who worked in a zoo as a child took the young animal and placed it into her bra to keep it warm. I had a syringe that I used to give my dog medicine so we fed the little creature some honey, warm water and a crumbled cookie. My daughter offered her fur boot covers so that it would feel fur around it. My other friend Leslie went off to get a heating pad so it would be warm.
I phoned animal control and they said that it probably wouldn’t make it, it was too young. They did say that if it did survive the next 24 hours I could bring it in to them. My friend had to leave so I put it into my bra … way too hot, that wouldn’t work for me. So I decided to wait for the heating pad. My daughter went off to see her boyfriend and they goggled; ” little pink hairless animals with long tails “.
It turned out that my little helpless animal was a 3 day old baby RAT!!!
My friend Leslie declined lending me her heating pad, my other friend Clare said we all need a shower and the poor little rat had to sleep alone in the guest bathroom.
Rat or no, I fed the little one every 3 hours and massaged his little stomach. He put his little paws around my finger and rat or not he was a sweet little guy.
I was deciding what to do with him the next day but the poor little thing passed away quietly during the night.
RIP little one.

Gulp, that was a surprise ending. I believe that possums are even smaller but at least it is rare that they get abandoned.

The universe rewarded me the next day for taking care of the little guy with a $20 bill which I found on the sidewalk.
