My Birthday Present, On my fifth birthday Dad bought me a set of cowboy guns and holster. I was so excited and couldn't wait to show my friends. After a couple of hours my excitement turned to despair, the guns fell apart at my feet.

My Birthday Present

When I was just a young lad
Dad worked in St. John’s Town
next week would be my birthday
so I kinda hinted round
I said “nothing would be finer
than a set of Cowboy guns
complete with badge and holster
just like the real ones.”

Dad went back to work on Monday
and Friday night back home he came
with Chocolate bars and a gift wrapped box
and a card that bore my name
I flustered with excitement
that welled from deep inside
I tore off the wrapping paper
and held my guns with pride

Next morning bright and early
I strapped my holster on
gulping down my breakfast
like the bullet I was gone
I went to find my buddies
to show off the guns I had
these two solid junks of iron
my gift from Mom and Dad

I found my friends all playing
outside Harolds shop
and when they saw my brand new guns
their games came to a stop
I drew my guns like Palladin
quick as the speed of light
but the guns did not feel heavy
I knew something wasn’t right

There before me on the ground
lay both barrels in the dirt
then I thought that Dad had paid
much more than they were worth
for just a few short hours
I really had some fun
and every single outlaw
was shot with my new guns

Mom, Dad, and I had joked around
for many years to come
about the words that Dad had said
concerning my new guns
he said, “a solid Junk of iron
the best twas ever made
they cost a lot of money
for the highest price I paid

Well Dad I have to tell ya
your intentions were all good
but those guns were really useless
they really were no good
a solid Junk of Iron
you got it two thirds right
eliminate the iron part
and that will make it right
