My Online Writing Career Started On Wikinut

Today I'm looking back at the steps I took to make money by writing articles on the internet and I will also look into the opportunities new technology and software opens up for online writers.

New Wikinut

Wikinut was actually still quite new when I joined and I thought it would be an excellent platform to start my online writing venture for "Chrysolite's Article Desk". I read the help files, I wrote and wrote and loved it. Wikinut was so easy to use and I soon got the hang of all the formatting features and finally the "stars" arrived on Wikinut which was actually the first time in my life that someone "judged" my writing! I was so happy with my small successes. Soon the first little payment from Wikinut arrived via PayPal.

Moving on ...

I guess there is no other online writing platform where you can use your profile page as your portfolio. So when I had a few articles together, that's exactly what I did. I joined other writing platforms and gave my Wikinut portfolio as a reference.

Did you know that many people simply type your name into Google Search to look what comes up and to look whether you are active on the internet? Well, they do, so I made sure that there was lots to find under the keyword "Antje Cobbett". I had joined many social networks and many other writing platforms and everywhere I left my link to my Wikinut profile which at the same time drove traffic to my Wikinut articles. And since those links will never be lost, ongoing traffic for my articles is ensured. It took me about 1 year to get a real online presence going and no, I didn't earn any money doing so, but I thought it was well worth it.

Mahalo - My first online job

At the time Mahalo had a "How to" section and they paid $5 for a good article. There was also a weekly contest and with my article "How to darn socks" (LOL) I won it. With it came another very welcome $25.

Mahalo then went through some major restructuring and if it's raining, I like to stand under an umbrella. Some question and answer gurus were required by Mahalo at that time. I joined and the sun was shining again and still is! I'm happily answering many questions every day getting paid for it.

Blogging with Adsense

Finally, Adsense approved of my account in Spain, so I set out immediately to design a few niche blogs on Blogger, wrote diligently short and 100% original content and networked them where ever I could.

How about the money? The eternal question. Yes, I do earn a little bit of money with the blogs, the traffic keeps coming in and there are people interested in what I write. But recently I had to make a difficult decision. Good blog writers write to the keywords that the public is searching for most. It's quite easy to do using AdWords. However, I have a big problem with this. There are millions of people writing blog posts on the same keywords. Money, money, money. Fair enough, but where is the content then? Real independent content to share with the reader? I have therefore decided to carry on with the blogs writing 1 post per month with really good content. The money will come in one day, maybe not much, but it's another income source working online.

Redgage vs. Wikinut?

I also have an account on Redgage and money comes trickling in continuously as I share articles, photos, videos and links there. It's a very nice community, similar to Wikinut. They also do a "Daily Raffle" which I won lately and so I got $40 together now. Soon my Redgage Visa card will arrive and then I can spend the money earned anywhere a Visa card is accepted online and offline. Of course, Wikinut and Redgage are not directly comparable, but both must come into the category of long term residual income, not much, but a steady trickle and the more one does on both sites, the more money is coming in.

Here and there and everywhere ...

Yes, I think that's the way forward for me. I also have a few clients that order blog posts from me. A nice extra, but not really a reliable or steady income. The freelancer's lot, I guess.

The internet is so big, so we can diversify and have many streams of online income! I know a lady that is doing particularly well with her macro photography and another one is video blogging. There are many more opportunities, so I really think there is a place for everybody who wants have an income from the net.

And always check if a writing offer is scam! The golden rule: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!" Reading the terms and conditions of a website is time invested wisely.

My online working cheat sheet

I've gone full circle now and I think I have all my personal online writing opportunities lined up. Nothing can stop me now to expand writing more articles on Wikinut, uploading more content to Redgage, writing more blog posts on my blogs, and writing for more clients! The sky is the limit!

Here's my little cheat sheet I always keep next to my computer, some people call it a to-do-list, others even think of it as a small business plan:

  • Write star articles on Wikinut
  • Write bonus articles on Redgage
  • Write blog posts on my own blogs and guest posts
  • Network everything at least on Twitter, Facebook and Google+
  • Comment on other people's blogs to produce backlinks
  • Write for clients world-wide
  • Search for new and paid writing opportunities on the net
  • Never write anything "nasty" on the internet, it's all recorded
  • Beware scam

I love these "new" ways of earning money on the internet and I'm very grateful for them.

At this point I want to say a heartfelt "Thank You" to Wikinut Team and the nice people in this Wikinut community for being there, Wikinut was my starting and learning platform which I can happily expand now!

Is a Wikinut article video the future?

A good article published on Wikinut will never be lost. It can be networked again and again to get more readers interested in the subject and with new software available on the internet, often for free or very low cost, we can now transform our articles into a video, a podcast or even an online radio show. The possibilities are there!

Here is a great example of such a Wikinut article video, enjoy!

I think it's based on The Healing Power of Stones and Crystals

Thank you, Steve! And please also thank your wife for the brilliant article on crystals and the video. I only noticed that it was from her after I published my article. I'm using crystals for healing as well and also do Electro-Crystal Therapy (Harry Oldfield, UK). It is very successful.

I wonder what you mean, GV Rama Rao. I've caught up with most of the Bill's in my life. I'm happily married to Bill Cobbett, I'm using Windows by Bill Gates, and I'm friends with MrBill on Redgage and I've only got one bill to pay which is the one for my service provider. Any other Bill I should include into my life? Maybe I forgot one, I'm so worried now!
