My Wonderful World of Words!

What a nice alliteration, if I may say so myself! ;) Yes, words are my work, my toys, my fun! And they are always with me! I can think them, speak them, write them, sing them ... read on!

Just words ...

Do I wonder sometimes why I get confused? Just imagine! My mother tongue is German with over 60.000 words. The language I think and write in is English with over 80.000 words and the language I speak every day is Spanish with over 40.000 words, because I live in Spain and have to communicate with the people around me. I won't pretend that I know all of those 180.000 words, probably not even half of them! But enough to get confused sometimes, enough to have fun with mix-ups and enough to make a reasonable living with - just words.

OM - the sacred word or syllable from the beginning of time and which we still use in meditation - is maybe not used so often anymore these days, but maybe we should. The little "holy" word gets so easily drowned out in our loud and hectic world. Would you like to sing OM with me for a while today to relish the word, to feel the peace? - OM, OM, OM.

Nice, wasn't it? :) Yes, and then all those differences between languages. All the idioms, colloquialisms, slang expressions, I mean, it does make me laugh at times. Take the word "puff" for example. In Spanish it simply means one of those soft, round, cushy seats that the Arabs brought here a long time ago. In German, the word can express the sound a steam engine makes or it can mean a "house of ill repute" ;) And in English, well, I guess I don't have to spell out the meaning. Or do you know what "fubar" means?

'tis a world of fun with these words. We can make anagrams, play with words, make crosswords, puzzles, sudoku and can make jokes with double meanings of words. In fact, the dry English sense of humour is literally based on the latter!

There is no end to the list of what we can do with words. We can write notes and articles, poems, rhymes and spells, scientific findings and the word of God! Isn't it amazing? And more so on the internet! "Online" is where words are everything! Content is king, so they say! And it's true. Nobody is interested in a long winded, boring website! KISS is the word: Keep It Short and Simple! And informative! And interesting! And a bit funny, maybe? That is the most difficult bit really!

Enigmatic, yes, I think we have to be a bit enigmatic, too, sometimes. But not always! Secretive, even or silent which would be just as well to get a respite from all the "word overload"! Or we can quietly whisper the still magic words: "I love you!" or we can "say what we want", we can state facts, we can twist words and we can tell lies. We can shout hateful words at an adversary and shout political slogans or war propaganda - still only words.

Lovingly, we can sing the words so gently in a baby's lullaby or sing a protest song! What a difference in sound and words we choose for each!

Lest we forget, we can express our deepest feeling with just a few words or we can hide the same feelings behind a wall of words. Often words fail us when we want to talk about feelings as it's not something we were taught. Learning to express feelings is nice, learning to express spirituality with words is even nicer, but even more difficult!

Long, boring speeches just consist of words and we often have a hard time to find out what the speaker of those long speeches really wants to express. Or hide? And the other extreme: If you can't say it in 170 letters (Twitter), don't bother, the attention span of people nowadays is even shorter than that!

Imagine it were your job to "make" new words. Internet - Spam - Email - Computer - Monitor - Mouse and many more! New words formed by young people who seemingly like to call things with "cute" names. Or "warm" or "different" or "meaningful (to them only)" names. It's a different world, a different way of thinking to us "oldies", but I like these new words, I really do!

Expressing myself with nice words, trying to add some humour, too (difficult for a German! ;)), yes, this is my world, the world of words I love, because in the other world there is only

Silence.

I must admit that words always have been a constant joy in my life too and I'm an admirer of your work ( ... this isn't the first of your articles that I have readed).
And I understand perfectly the little confusion that two or three different languages can produce some days (Portuguese, Spanish, English and a little bit of Italian). By the way, do you have some articles in Spanish as well?
Writing is one of my passions (but just like a hobby). Can you give some advice to overcome literary shyness? whenever I am in the position to publish something, I froze ( ...I want everything to be perfect). Which is the proper balance between quality and excess of self criticism? Thanks and "un saludo a la hermosa y soleada España".
