My fabulous Grandchildren.

Grandchildren are always a source of immense joy. My grandchildren are no less. In fact, they are a notch better, in my opinion.

My Grandchildren.

I have six grandchildren three from each of my two daughters. This piece is about the three from my older daughter. Grandchildren viewed from the eyes of a grandparent look like angels, flawless and eminently lovable, but my grandchildren whom I call WGCs (Wonderful Grandchildren) provide copy for volumes. They give me a purpose in the evening of my life and immense happiness when they play or interact with me.
Collectively, when they happily play together, they are a sight for Gods and make my day. The large room where they play reverberates with their laughter, and the whole room comes alive. Unfortunately, these periods of bliss do not last long, but it is a different story.

The eldest boy.

The eldest, a boy of thirteen is a class by himself. Tall for his age---he is five ten and growing fast, is handsome and knows it. He is most likely to be a heartthrob for many girls when he grows up. He sports a mischievous grin and a distinctive hairdo and is always on the lookout for causing trouble. He walks with his head in the clouds for he is aspiring to be either a brain surgeon or a NBA star. He does not settle for anything short of the top drawer variety whether in career or cars. He perpetually talks of top end cars like Bugatti and turbocharged engines which rev up to speeds in excess of three hundred mph. Sharp, he grasps the subject fast and oozes confidence. Like most of the intelligent people, he is lazy and looks at homework with complete disdain. He has an impressive vocabulary, but the words roll on his tongue and show reluctance to come out. Obsessed with basketball and outdoor games, he runs at the first opportunity to shoot hoops or throw the football. If the weather gods are not kind, he plays the games on his X-box and gets vicarious pleasure of playing his favourite games including Call of Duty. As the eldest of three children at home, he thinks he is manor born and issues commands to his siblings. For him, it is his way or no way. His long dandy legs and dangling arms are hyperactive and are always on the lookout for a suitable device or object to smash, squeeze, ruffle or elbow and if the situation permits to hit. He has a sweet tongue and pleasant demeanour whenever he is not upset which, unfortunately, is often. He is opinionated and thinks anyone who does not agree with him as weird or an idiot. He minces no words when he is angry and calls people just that.

The second one.

The second one, all of ten and a fifth grader, is a doll and looks like one at all times except when she is angry. Very talented and energetic, she is a Type A personality and settles for nothing short of the best. Cent percent is par for the course for her in everything she does be it a maths test or playing the flute. A discordant note or a single mistake or a strand of hair out of place upsets her terribly and changes her demeanor totally. The transformation from a gorgeous young girl to an angry brat is swift and takes a few nanoseconds. She is remarkably creative and is always engaged in writing a short story, an essay or a script for a play. She produces a daily newspaper giving all the events of the day and throws in a crossword and word hunt for the benefit of her readers. Quick on the uptake, she is fast in solving riddles and brainteasers. A feminist to the core, she fights for her rights and rights of women and takes umbrage whenever the weaker sex is slighted even by a micron. She is in a hurry to be a renowned doctor and is going through her paces rapidly.

The Youngest.

The third one is a boy of eight and is in the third grade. Hyperactive and agile he moves around the house with a swagger like a boxer in training. He behaves like a docile and well- behaved child at school and a coiled spring released at home. He admits he has plenty of reserve energy, which he lets loose at home. When anyone, be it one of his parents or siblings, acts against his wishes or contradicts him, he will vent his ire in a microsecond. When angry, he loses his cool fast, hurls words like an idiot and stupid and swings his arms and legs with remarkable force. Although small in build, he packs a punch in his fists and remarkable strength in his kicks. He makes profound statements and with the same ease he lets go a flurry of invective. Quick in temper, he is equally fast in apologizing. One day while I was drinking Scotch, he told me liquor damages the liver. He said it with such conviction that I reduced my drinking by 80% and never had a drink in his presence. His grit merits mention as he takes on his elder brother-- taller by a foot and double his weight, easily and gives two for every three he receives. I think he will always punch above his weight.

A peep into the future.

I am devising ways and means to increase the length of their fuses and advising them to vent their anger on me. I hope my methods will produce tangible results in the near future. For the present, I have no hesitation in condoning their little faults. I and my children were nowhere near perfect, but my grandchildren are likely to be closer to perfect. Finally, when I see them, I’m reminded of an Englishman who said, “England with all thy faults, I love thee.”

It is my great fortune to have six grandchildren and a greater blessing to have such fabulous grandchildren. I’d like to see their progress in life, but I’m not sure how much I’d be able to see. I count my blessings every day and do not think of tomorrow.
