How I wrote my second novel in the series 'Tales from the Shaman's Record'

My second novel

My first book, Zebra Crossings, Tales from the Shaman's Record, was published in South Africa by Jacana in 2008. In 2009 I got a writing fellowship at the University of Cape Town and used that time to write a sequel. It was accepted by my publishers, in 2010, and after the usual book-production process it was launched in 2011. It's The Zombie and the Moon, More Tales from the Shaman's Record.

It has the same shaman and his apprentice as in the first book, and like that book it takes place in South Africa and abroad. In the first book they travel around the Cape and then to Egypt and to England. In the second book they travel in the Cape and then to the USA. I draw on my own travel diaries for material for their itineraries and experiences.

Again, as in the first book, it is all about imagination and reality, past and present, and healing. In this case the focus is on a sad and mad zombie, who receives healing at the end. There is much more to unpack from the Shaman's Record and I am working on more sequels.
