Nearly November - Are you Entering #NaNoWriMo ???

Have you made plans? Are you ready to go? If you have a story in your mind, then it would be a great idea to enter the National Novel Writing Month, abbreviated to NaNoWriMo. The idea is to get everybody writing around the world. Can you write a novel in a month? Why not give it a try and have some fun doing it.

Time to dust off your Fictional Writing Skills

It has been said that every person has a great story inside them, trouble is few people take the time and effort to write it down, let alone publish it. That is the aim of National Novel Writing Month, to get everyone writing and exploring all possibilities. There is no monetary prize, but the key to this challenge is in both organising your book and focusing on getting the words down on paper. If you reach 50,000 words you will be declared a winner and you will be able to celebrate alongside all the other winners in the contest.

I am in touch with a couple of writers who at one time wrote on Wikinut, one of them has entered the contest on several occasions and has published several of her stories because of the contest, winning several times, this is my first time, I have a story in mind, or at least I have a start in mind and some plot directions that I have been considering for the story, trouble is I do not have an ending for the story. Will this be troublesome as I progress? Will I find the ending among the way? Obviously I would prefer the latter, but I believe that if I don't start I will never know, With clever writing I should be able to reach the 50,000 words even if I don't have a conclusion in place.

Why 50,000 Words?

There is psychological evidence that shows that once a writer reaches 50,000 words their chance of completing improves by a factor of 3. Fifty thousand words sounds like a lot, but it is actually 1,667 words per day over the total 30 day period and I see some writers here on Wikinut produce that many words in a single article and keep adding one item per day, sometimes more - for other writers I have seen them produce continuing stories that are 500 to 700 words long and have three simultaneous submissions each day, so they are easily reaching the contest's recommended daily contribution.

50,000 words, when printed on book sized pages equates to somewhere between 100 and 120 pages depending on the formatting and layout. If you look back to the past for the first two thirds of the twentieth century the majority of stories were shorter than many published today, perhaps being 150 to 180 pages in length rather than exceeding 300 pages, but of course there were always ones that were longer. The point is that once you reach 50,000 words a large segment of your story has been told and all that is left is expanding parts of the story, editing, and perfecting the conclusion.

Why is Peter Giblett Entering?

I would not generally count myself as a fictional writer, having said that I have written many snippets of fiction over time and do continue to develop them when I am in the right mood, I will be honest - most of the story ideas I have had I have given to other people, just passed them over and abandoned them. There is a folder on my hard drive that is forever full of story snippets, most of which have reached their limit. Many come from fictional dreams that I have started writing, but once the idea reaches the virtual paper, it stays locked away in that folder on my hard drive and doesn't advance any more, perhaps I should move them to Evernote where they will be more visible and accessible.

The story I am writing for #NANOWRIMO comes from two dreams, one of which was a dream about a name of an ancient society, perhaps in excess of 3,500 years old and the power they possess, the other about an upgrade to First Class on a fifteen hour flight and a long discussion with a lady on that flight where we solved the world's problems at least in our minds.

Synopsis

This is a tale about the modern workings of an ancient society seen from the eyes of a new member who was recently invited to join the Idea Council - a group of 437 people worldwide, also referred to internally as "The 400", a think tank which at the heart of its role is the need to change the world, overthrow vested interests and change how the planet is run before time runs out.

He discovers how history and the future are inextricably linked and the hero must get to grips with both the workings and the history of the Société in order to plot a course that provides one future for humanity, standing in his way those that refuse to envision a future without greed and recognises the capability of each person to contribute positively to the future.

Why Now?

I have spent time looking at various things on both Facebook and Google Plus, both of which have great writing communities and after reading some of the discussions by members I came to the realisation that now was a good time to start building a story and it was either this one or developing a story for my great detective - a modern day sleuth the equal of Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot. Mystery is something I have always wanted to write, especially in the context of the modern world of forensic science and DNA but the necessary plot twists of mystery stories do take time to put together as it is necessary to drop clues and red-herrings all over the place and there seems little room for the traditional private detective in the modern world - I will write this, but it will take much research.

The story I have selected to tell will of course have its plot twists, but none on such a scale as Mrs Christie, the master of that particular art.

Peter, 50,000 words in one month still seems impossible to me at this time. I have never tried it before. But, i honestly don't think, I have enough time to put into it. Thanks for sharing. Maybe, I will try when things slow down around here. Hopefully, in a year or two.

It is quite a challenge, but it is not about thinking of it from the total word count viewpoint, but about targets per step taken and knowing the number of steps necessary to complete the challenge.

I have a novel under way Peter, but it was started in October and the first draft will probably not be finished until December. I spend too much time on my blog because I'm a stats junkie.

Thank you, but remember this it isn't about the 50,000 word total, it is about each step that must be taken along the way.

    Hi Peter.
I have done NaNoWriMo twice. The first time I managed to write some 70k words, but last year I only got about 20k done before I let it go.

I do not think you will have any trouble with the ending. I suggest letting your characters write it. Progress as you have in mind but then let the story take over and you will know where to go once you get there. As far as foreshadowing and other techniques, you can always go back and put them in once you know the ending.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy the process.

    Good Luck friend. - Elliott

Peter, thanks for sharing your article. I wish you the best on writing your story. I had to smile when I was reading your article because just the other night I dreamed that I was going to the ship yard to get on a boat and do undercover work for the government. What in the world kind of dream that was I don't know. It was so strange that when I woke up I told everybody about it. It would make a good story though.

Nancy, I don't dream, not normally. If I dream it is in the form of a story, or clues to a story. With that dream of yours I see the next adventure for the dynamic duo.

Quite a challenge but one has to test the potential than live with lost opportunities.

I have to try writing an outline of a novel to see whether I am up to it. Thanks for the heads-up, Peter - siva
