Nerd Brian Origins: Science Fiction

Star Trek or Star Wars? It’s an easy response for me - Star Trek. Hands down. In my household growing up, I have always had influences pushing me towards the Star Trek franchise - mainly from two things in particular. One is my father, and the other is my uncle.

I must have been six or seven years old when I first was exposed to Star Trek. I remember it was summertime, and my family and I were having fun in the backyard. At a particular time, my father departed us, and went in the house. Apparently it was the season finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation that was appearing on T.V. that day. Curious to what my father was watching, I went in the house and watched with him. While I didn’t watch TNG (The Next Generation) on a regular basis at that point, it was something that I began to watch occasionally, especially since it was the living room television my father watched Star Trek, and there were no televisions in our bedrooms as kids.

Another connection I have to Star Trek came in 1991 - my uncle wrote an episode of TNG, and it got on the air. Now, I am bias, but I think this episodes is one of the upper echelon of the series, especially ones that didn’t deal with regular alien species, nor had a multi-episodic effects to it. By that, I mean this episode fits into a category where the Enterprise does not interact with an alien species that is found in other episodes (e.g., Romulans, Ferengi, etc.), besides of course regular cast members such as Worf and Troi. In addition, the episode ends with no loose ends that affect future episodes.

So when your father enjoys the show, you may become a fan, but when you have a family member, someone of which you share a bloodline, write an episode for one of the best shows ever - you naturally become a Star Trek fan for life. Since that point, I have been a big fan of later Star Trek series and films which have come out since then.

When it comes to some of the other series, I have seen them all in their entirety (Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise), but I did not generally watch them when they originally aired. during that span in my life, I was usually occupied with something (e.g., working part time jobs, going to school, etc.) For some episodes, it didn’t really matter too much that I missed some previous episodes in the series, ones that were not part two of a cliffhanger (to be continued), nor had any content in that particular episode contingent of watching previous episodes.

Eventually, I did end up seeing Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise in their entirety. And boy were they addicting! While I had watched Deep Space Nine episodes sporadically, I really thought it was the lesser of the Star Trek series’ until I watched them in sequential order. While I probably still consider TNG to be my favorite Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine is right up there, almost tied.

I also enjoyed the Star Trek films as well, especially Star Trek: First Contact. That movie in particular has a special place in my heart. It was the last film I saw at the original Cine Capri (those of you in the Greater Phoenix Metro Area know what I’m talking about). In general, I enjoyed most all the Star Trek films that featured the TNG crew, and have only recently gone back and rewatched some of the earlier films depicting the Original Series (TOS) crew.

A polarizing topic amongst Star Trek fans are in the reboot movies. Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. IMdB has those two films rated 8.0 (Star Trek) and 7.9 (Star Trek Into Darkness), which are both very good scores. A theme in the first film is time travel, which in effect, forks the timeline from all the previous films with the Star Trek name. Essentially they can now take the rebooted franchise anywhere they want without running into any continuity issues. While I love all the prior films, I don’t mind seeing the film series re-launched for the following reasons:

1. A lot of time has passed since the most recent TNG crew films, and story-line wise, many they probably wouldn’t all be on the Enterprise any longer.
2. The new series has younger actors who can bring a whole new generation of Trek fans into the fold.
3. As mentioned above, the re-launched films aren’t bad, they are critically acclaimed, and have made a lot of money.
4. Spock - the most well known Vulcan has made appearances in both Star Trek re-launched films and, I feel, has bridged old and new Trekkers into this re-imagined franchise.

From many, there seems to be a one or the other choice - Star Trek or Star Wars. I don’t believe this needs to be the case. As I elaborated at length above, I definitely have more of an affinity towards Star Trek, but Star Wars isn’t bad. I have seen the six Star Wars films to date. In fact, I’ve seen them all a couple of times. I found that they were fun, action/fantasy movies, but they definitely did not hold my interest the way Star Trek did. I think this may lay in the fact that Star Wars are more of a Sci-Fantasy genre, rather than Star Trek’s genre of Sci-Fi. I believe the difference is that science fiction attempts to build a plausible future based on current conditions, while science-fantasy, exists completely in a different realm.

I have found that over the years, I definitely favor more sci-fi rather than sci-fantasy. For example, another favorite of mine is the Terminator series. I am a fan of each of the four major motion pictures currently out. And while the first or second one are considered the best two films of the series (and I agree), there are parts of all four that I really enjoyed. I am really looking forward to the new Terminator: Genesis slated to come out July of 2015. It is my understanding this will be a relaunch, but am thrilled that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be in the film. In addition, the film builds on its list of popular actors/actresses by casting Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) in the film as Sarah Connor. If done right, this is a film that can bring in another generation into the Terminator lore.

Well, I think I’ll end there. I originally meant to talk about Sci-Fi in general, but the more I wrote, the more it ended up being more about Star Trek. Oh well. What are your thoughts on Sci-Fi, Sci-Fantasy, Star Trek, Star Wars, or Terminator?

Star Trek is superior, I have said the same thing myself. Star Trek is about learning and exploring, Star Wars is about fighting and hate.

Thanks for your comment Brenda Marie. I enjoy Star Wars as well, but just not as much as Trek. I am, indeed looking forward to the new film later this year.

Thank you Mark for your comment - I agree, and I believe that Trek needs to come back on the small screen, where it can best tell those stories of learning and exploring.
