this page presents the attitudes that the society has towards disabled women when it comes to sexuality and reproduction

the society with negative attitudes

women with disabilities in the society are mostly seen as asexual and treated as though they do not have a right or even need to experience sexual related issues. This is not just in the general society, but is is also seen to be common among the professionals whom the disabled women have come in contact with, this therefore kills the fight for inclusion of the disabled in the society. This aspect of seeing the disabled women a being asexual has led to them being seen as not in need of information about birth control or even anything related to having a sexual life as well as having children. The disability movement is supposed to be seen as a voice both to reach pout to the disabled women, to collect their views and also their experiences and to present them to the relevant bodies, but in contrary the disabled women are complaining about the failure of the movements in addressing sexuality as a political issue just like issues of housing and transportation.
Part two
It is a fact beyond possible doubt that many people with disabilities se sexuality as an area of greatest and immeasurable oppression. The disabled claim that they find sexuality a matter of more concern as well as finding fulfillment more than they are concerned with how to get on a bus. The reason as to why the disabled are seen as asexual comes from the way they are seen as eternal children, the weird thing about it is that people without disabilities tend to view sex as an acrobatic activity which makes it difficult for them to imagine how people with physical impairments can be sexually active. But it is very sacarstic how people in the society will look at the disabled as asexual and still record the increasing number of sexual abuse for women and children with disabilities. This is mostly experienced by the disabled women who live in institutions. This has been given some response that sexual abuse is more related to the oppressive use of power and control than it has to do with the mere sex. The people who abuse the disabled sexually are said to be out in look for and use the vulnerability of the disabled to create the opportunity to rape them.

This vulnerability is mostly seen in the people who are marginalized, people who are dependent and also people who are in dire need for affection. The more a person or a group of people happen to be vulnerable, the more they are faced with the dangers of being sexually abused. And it is even shown in many studies that disabled women are facing this great risk as compared to any other group of women in the society. But it is a sad thing that even professionals tend to ignore this fact, and some who are pro disability rights have gone to the depth of finding out that there are numerous disabled women who have been sterilized to keep their rape experiences from the public eyes. The medical field is the field that is so helpful for any woman and more so for the disabled women, but at times you may find that even the health care providers show negative attitudes towards disabled women who seek medical attention when it comes to pregnancy and family planning.
