It's a story of a man who complains about today's lifestyles and the people of today. Everything he treasures and enjoys come from past times. He measures society by his 'outdated' standards, he cannot understand why people say he is old fashioned.

A Game of Bowles

Lost at bowls again, I don’t know, the greens are not as short as they aren’t cut like they used to be. Now days they use those electric lawn mowers, they don’t cut the grass like the old push mowers. I remember how well they cut the grass; you could have lines up and down the lawn, or even crosses, that made them look good, it made you feel like you were playing real bowls, you know, it took more skill and you have to roll the bowls slowly or they would run off the end. The grounds men in the old days even went round with a pair of scissors after cutting the lawns. Yes, we are all playing on the same turf but these youngsters today know no difference, the game has lost it’s skill, anyone can play now days. There’s Greg now coming over to gloat no doubt but I will not rise to the bait. ‘Hi Eugene, good game this afternoon, you had some real bad luck, why don’t you pop into the bar for a drink?’ ‘Thanks Greg I have time for one but my bus is due in forty minutes so it will have to be quick.

‘Right then Eugene, what will it be?’ ‘Light and bitter thanks Greg.’ ‘Blimey Eugene I have not heard of a light and bitter for years, didn’t know they still did them, how’s life on your own now getting used to it?’ ‘Yes it’s just a matter of routine I do things the old way, no vacuum hoovers, no washing machine that’s the way to do things, just like they were done in the old days.’

I remember the Green Line Services

Bloody started to rain, always rains when it’s time to get the bus and it’s an uphill walk what a day. All this rubbish on the footpath and along the side of the road, people now days just don’t care they cannot be bothered to take their rubbish home or use a litter bin. It tells me that there parents had no values to pass on. That’s the trouble with the youngsters no moral fibre. When I was their age and threw my rubbish on the floor, God forbid, someone would tell me to pick it up or a policeman would give you a clip round the ear. If policemen went around these kids today and gave them a clip round the ear there would be none of this vandalism, no hanging around street corners drinking beer, the country would be how it should be, discipline, that’s the answer to today’s troubles.

Ah, the bus stop at last, and I am a few minutes early, see I brought my umbrella, lucky I did. Not many carry an umbrella with them these days, they just don’t think ahead. Now that’s another problem with people today they don’t plan ahead and moan when they get caught out, serves them right. Where’s that bus, late again, don’t drivers have watches anymore? When I was young inspectors would be waiting at bus stops and if the bus was late he would have something to say about it, that’s for sure, and the driver and the bus conductor had better have a good excuse. Now that’s anther thing there are no conductors anymore. Any trouble in the old days and the conductor would throw the offenders off the bus. In these country villages they had the old Green Line service, now that was a good service, a little more expensive, but worth it.

Here it comes, struggling to get up the hill, what do they use for an engine a rubber band the Green Line service would drive up a mountain with no trouble, cost cutting, it’s not really a saving, you get what you pay for.

Tea is not like it used to be

Well home at last, make myself a cup of tea. No tea bags in my house only loose tea just they way it’s supposed to be made, pour hot water in the teapot, swish it round until the teapot is hot, then two tea spoons of tea, pour on hot water then let it brew. That’s how to make a real cup of tea, strong and hot, most people these days would not know the difference between a real cup of tea and a teabag. The other day when I was out shopping I stooped a snack wagon and they gave me a cup of tea in a plastic cup and it was so weak you could nearly see the bottom of the cup, so I just left it on the counter and walked away, I don’t know. Anyway I will have my tea in my study. I love my study. I call it my library, full of shelves and the shelves full of books. I don’t have a television, nothing but rubbish on it, the films are all about sex and violence, that’s not for me. Anyway let’s turn on my wireless and listen to some real music. Can’t beat classical music, the rubbish music, if you can call it music, on these days is just blaring loud noise. It gives me a headache you can’t understand the words, what are people like?

Me! Old Fashioned? Poppycock!

What about these computers today? Nobody actually learns anything anymore just press a button and wham, it’s all there, or so I’m told. Never used one before and I never will so called technology, so called laziness I’d say. If you can’t find it in a book then you should be ashamed of yourself.

The books in my study are all I want. How can anyone compare a computer with a good book? Do you know I have books in here dated back to the seventeenth century. There is nothing more gratifying than to hold an old leather bound book, and read about how things were in those days. And my encyclopaedias, when they were written they took an army of writers ten years to write them, they state that the word is only six thousand years old. You can learn a lot from old books and half the fun is comparing lifestyles then to lifestyles now, you cant beat it.

Do you know, and I find this so hard to believe, that some people think I am old fashioned. What do they know eh, nothing, absolutely nothing. I eat out, I enjoy eating out, in fact I think I will go and have a meal out this evening. It may be on my own but I enjoy my own company. I may not have any friends but I don’t want friends how can I have a friend with nothing in common. Anyway about tonight, there’s a Berni Inn nearby that do a good menu, what shall I have? I know, starters will be a prawn cocktail, then maybe steak and chips with a nice piece of black forest gateau for desert. Old fashioned what a load of poppycock.

Well they say, some people of the modern era forget the beauties of yesterday and go aping things that ultimately spoil the true essence of who and what they are.
Look around you, the values of life has deteriorated to the extent that everyone wants new stuff, new partners if their old ones are not good enough, etc. Well certain things and gadgets are great new and they are much needed, but most of the antiques hold higher value as they are irreplaceable and honestly, nothing can ever change the antiques I have with me although I would replace certain things to make it better but I love my old way of life.
The total change comes only when you feel like fitting in or showing off and I want neither, I just want to be myself and live my life the way I am so I live everyone to their ways except when it comes to my child as that is totally my responsibility to bring the life and the respect he needs to live on this planet as I brought him into the world and no one else can do this but me and fact remains that a child is always the most precious to a mother and when the child is unable to understand a situation, it is the parent who clarifies it not a third party. Those its ancient tradition but it still remains the same in modern times.

It doesn't mean discarding and beating your elders either, it means honouring them to get the learning that he so badly needs.
