On My Birthday

Since today is my birthday, I thought I'd provide a glimpse into my life aside from Wikinut. Purely self-indulgent, of course, but perhaps worth a laugh or two at my expense. See for yourself.

On My Birthday, I Should get Breakfast in Bed...

Should being the operative word... When my alarm woke me mercilessly this morning, because you know I stayed up too late once again playing Candy Crush, watching Meet the Browns and Rules of Engagement, and then reading (this week it's Nora Robert's Dance of the Gods), I got up intending to ask my husband to take our son to school on this last school day of 2013 and his last day of public school. Like so many other families, we are making the switch from a brick and mortar school to an online public charter school (more on that in another article, I'm sure). But my husband had already left for work, so I curled up under a blanket on the couch.

Greeting from My Son, My Wonderful Boy

My son comes into the living room 15 minutes later and gives me a sleepy hug. He tells me I smell like bananas (I have no idea why I would smell like bananas). He tells me how excited he is to open his Secret Santa gift at school. He does NOT tell me Happy Birthday -- because he has forgotten. He's forgotten because he's 10. And his father did not stick around this morning to remind him -- not that he would, anyway. My husband does not go out of his way to make a big deal of birthdays, even if I do.

On Facebook

Aha! On Facebook I am loved. Thirty-five lovely folks and counting saw the event on the right side of their screens -- "Phyl Campbell's birthday is today. Send her a message." -- and dutifully clicked to write on my timeline. There is an incredible amount of personality that comes -- from the most simple birthday greeting to the most elaborate. I try to respond to each one personally -- not as in my secretary (I wish I had a secretary) composes responses for me, but personally in that I want to write something either reflecting back their greeting or mentioning our affiliation. The worst example was having to go back through my e-mails because one of my ESL students has returned to Taiwan and his name is Chinese symbols only -- and I forgot what his name was!! So I spent some time going back through my attendance records so I could call "Paul" by the name he used in class. I would not want to be accused of being lazy in my appreciation!!

On Twitter

On Twitter and on Facebook, I asked people to, for my birthday, buy a copy of my kid's book and give it to a child. I didn't say for Christmas. I didn't say for Chanukah or Kwanza or Solstice or any other reason. The reason is for (or in honor of) my birthday. And I think that's reason enough. Will it help sales? Couldn't hurt.

On Facebook, I also added the "no purchase necessary" option of leaving a review for me for any of my books on Goodreads or Amazon. Again, I figured it couldn't hurt. If you'd like to review one of my books, leave a COMMENT below and we'll see what we can do!

Presents

A present for me? Oh, geez. You shouldn't have.

Oh -- you didn't?

Well, I guess that's OK, too.

I am going to spend some time wrapping gifts this morning -- for my son and for his teacher and for my son from his aunt (since she lives in another state, we exchange cash for our kids, buy them what they need, and sign it from each other), and for my family. My family celebrates a religious Christmas, though I would prefer Santa and secular, since the Christ Child was most likely born in April and shouldn't be "interfering" with my birthday. (Easter affects my son's special day, but not every year and not as completely overshadowing as Christmas!) But when one's mother is a nurse who often worked during the holiday, and a few of my sisters are traveling, we've gotten used to adjusting. This year, we are getting together on Sunday instead of the 25th to celebrate Christmas. We are also getting together Saturday, and the "C" word better not be mentioned then, because...

Speaking of my sisters, two of them celebrate their birthdays Saturday -- and nope, they are not twins. I do think it was Nature's cruel idea or a joke to have THREE solstice babies so close to the biggest other gift-giving holiday (for kids, it's birthday and Christmas. For us, that's only one thing, really), and I can't say we're always sharing graciously, but it's a unique challenge in its way.

Our mother has TRIED to let us have one day as our birthday -- since we already share that with more than one sibling -- one day to not have to share with the Grand Hippie who gets the entire month -- and for which holiday stores all but ignore Halloween and Thanksgiving -- starting "C" holiday specials immediately after Labor Day. Don't knock us until you've spent the decades in our shoes!

This year, the day the three of us will share is Saturday. We're doing a breakfast/brunch thing at my mother's. It may seem simple to you, but with five siblings, a kid, a dog, and a lot of picky eaters, it was NOT an easy arrangement. Mom -- I know you won't read this anytime soon, but I do appreciate you!!

So There You Have It

Some blog entries are fun-filled with fascinating ideas. Some are passionate -- illustrating viewpoints and opinions that are feisty and fiery on parenting, religion, politics, and celebrities. Some give reviews over books and movies; others delve into recipes and how-tos of all manner of things. I've done a little of each. But off the beaten path, I find that sometimes some people just need to see the human-ordinary-ness of others -- to laugh, cry, and share with them -- to promote understanding by putting one's self out there or by reading the efforts of those that do. And my birthday seemed like a pretty good reason to do just that! Thanks for coming along!

LOVERME -- thank you; I'm sure I don't deserve that compliment with this piece.

Carolina -- which, incidentally, is my niece's name and we share the birthday date -- thank you for your support always. Love and light and all good things!!

My birthday is waaaaay off (I only have one every five years now) but this morning I stayed in bed with Lisbeth Salander until nearly noon. And my wife did not mind at all.
I'm reading "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" triology again :-)

HA HA HA! Thanks -- I needed a laugh! I haven't read GWTDT. I was told it was too gore-filled for my interest, which is likely. Also never saw the movie. Your thoughts?

Happy belated birthday Phyl. Got a little time to read and review between work, so here I am. yes, I would love to review your book so contact me please. The book cover is so attractive. If the illustrator is the young lady you wrote about, then she really is as talented as you stated. Michelle

Birthday greetings Phyl, though belated. My late father's words ring inside me on my birthdays to keep me from going overboard - everyday is a good day and every moment is auspicious if we have good intentions.- siva

Good evening, Phyl; I missed this. My sister is visiting from Baltimore and her birthday is the 21st. She was never certain if she got "enough" presents on her birthday, so this year I made sure that she knew how special she was to me. Many of your asked for - breakfast in bed were a treat for her. So, a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PHYL :) ~Marilyn
