We have relatives all over the west, my wife and I, and she won't fly so we drive when we go to see them. This is a collection of short poems I have collected through our years together, little pictures of America flying by.

On the Road Again...The Great American Adventure...East of Bakersfield Calif.

East of Bakersfield

It’s the kind of heat
that knocks you off your feet
out here in the Mojave
where the Joshua trees grow
deformed by the same
sun and wind

that we slip through
so comfortably
at sixty degrees,
just a quarter inch away
from a hundred and fifteen
in the shade
and thinking
nothing of it.

50 Miles South of Vegas

50 Miles South of Vegas

The sign read
552 miles to home
from way out here
in the middle of the Mojave
at a hundred and five
and no AC
in the BMW M3,

with road construction ahead,
a truck in the fast lane
and no-one to blame
but a radiated sky,
the need to fly,
and a sign that read
‘ICE COLD BUD’
straight ahead.

Rocky Mountain National Park...(Trail Ridge Road)

Rocky Mountain National Park
(Trail Ridge Road)

At the end of road
where mountain trail grows
so tall as to touch
the very breast of sky,
steeped in heat and rocky,
we go skyward for miles
straight up, but unafraid

(so far)
where God once lived,
(they say)
unplugged and cutoff
with a prayer in our hearts
rejoicing in the blessings
of a life still living,
knowing that Good Lord knows
the very breath of our drive
as we feel His chilled embrace
in the silence
of His hills….Way, way
down there.

On the Road Again

On the Road Again

River Rock, Wyoming.
Population: 8,
Elevation 7185 feet
Two trailers and a hay stack
lost behind
the dusty curves of desert road.
Who is it that stays
in such a empty place

just to scratch a living
out of desert and sand,
wind, and sweat?
And who is it
that would leave
all this beauty
and quiet
behind?

Mt. Rushmore

Mt. Rushmore

It takes a certain kind of person,
in a certain frame of mind
to stand there before all that ruble,
all those millions and millions
pieces of shattered and whittled stone,
pebbles if you will,
laying there
scattered at the feet
of giants

and then put it
into some kind of perspective
with all the sticks and stones
that are cluttering up our lives,
to understand
what a man
and his dream can do

with a mountain
when he puts heart and soul
into it.

I have been writing since the beginning of time it seems, not because I want to write, but because I have too. My favorite form of writing is poetry, all kinds and types of poetry.

Nice poems. I went down the memory lane when I visited LA, Las Vegas, and a few places mentioned in your poems. Good work. However, it would be nicer if your poems follow a pattern or a format.

Thanks for reading GV, it is always nice to see you, but you have got all mixed up here. I thought they did, the pattern was traveling, road trips through the west, or did you mean poetically, like blank verse, or free verse?
