One night of passion

This poem addresses the sensitive issue of teenage pregnancy. It explores the feelings of both the mother and father of the unborn child. Furthermore it reflects on teens' sexual attitudes and behaviour.

Unreasonable Pleasure

Her voice still echoes in my mind,
A chilling shadow lurks close behind.
I hide behind a blanket of drink,
It can’t remove reproduction’s juicy stink.
I drown my thoughts in this fierce flood,
Yet I still have to pay for that animalistic rush of blood.

I see her face in my wine glass,
My desire had form but my mind had no class.
Fate means I can’t erase the past,
An unwanted soul causes this pain to last.
Uncontrolled heat made my self-respect drop,
Hours of reason couldn’t make us stop.

Conflict rips through the unsettled heart,
I bow to the power of the unforgiving dart.
Daily I suffer from internal bleeding,
This cannot be blamed on poor breeding.
Guilt is my new home,
I wish I never spent that night in Rome.

It’s futile passing the blame,
No matter which road I follow all I see is shame.
I had the tool in my pocket,
For that crime I should open my own docket.
Those five minutes claimed three lives,
The red lights blind me on long drives.

I was a child performing adult acts,
I should have abandoned impulse for hard facts.
My partner’s life has gone up in smoke,
Even wool starts to poke.
She was a year behind me,
Minutes of joy stings like a bee.

Her school life has come to an abrupt end,
Life drives her in circles and around the treacherous bend.
She regrets choosing emotion over intellect,
There are very few support bases to select.
Both of us have forgotten about fun,
The road is clear, but we have nowhere to run.

We have no choice but to look ahead,
At least god sends us our daily bread.
There is another soul that depends on us,
She will need us even after she learns to board a bus.
In time she will become quite smart,
It is up to us to give her a start.

When she is old enough we will teach her well,
She will learn how her parents stumbled and fell.
We will not make her pay for our mistakes,
When it comes to desire she will know to apply the brakes.
Our darling will always think thrice,
She will not roll those dangerous dice.
