Online Writing Sites give our Voices a Platform

Online writing sites leave their door open for almost all to showcase their talent. The more the merrier seems a cliche but some have less than good intentions, sadly. On the other hand, contributors too should play their part to enhance the sites through quality inputs that stand the test of time. It takes two hands to clap.

What a Blessing

For people like me, online writing sites serve as a blogging site to air our views and also connect with others across the globe. I feel blessed at being given such an opportunity when I recall those who had flair to put their thoughts to paper but did not have the opportunity to reach a wider audience. Many gifted writers and thinkers were denied such a place. I recall a friend telling me thirty years ago that before he goes to bed every day he wrote a page crystallizing his take on his life and experiences. Technology has indeed blessed us in many ways.

Sharing our Thoughts

The urge to share with others our innermost thoughts and experiences are from time immemorial. I read recently that cave art dating back 40,000 years has been found in Sulawesi, Indonesia, supposed to be the oldest ever found in Asia. It includes animal drawings and hand stencils that were drawn onto limestone cave sites; artwork is almost as old as those found in Europe. Though we now have better avenues to showcase our talent, the inner urge is same – to share our life and thoughts with others so that our lives attain a higher purpose and meaning.

Realistic Take

It is but natural to expect rewards for our efforts and make it a source of income so that we can devote more time in this fulfilling field away from mundane day-to-day lives. Internet has thrown up many sites but few flatter only to deceive in the end! We can give some the benefit of doubt as they are trying a business model but it behooves on them to be forthright and upfront. Some even tout endlessly sites to make it look one can make a living out of online sites, but the reality is different. If they look too good to be true, it usually is! For me, the intention matters as most are simple folks that believe in others and they should never be taken advantage of. Contributors should also enhance the site through meaningful and well-crafted posts

Digits in the Game

When I tell others that my passion is online writing, most are curious and even reveal that they too would like to get into the game. I warn them however, it can only occupy their spare time to start with and then see where it leads them to. Everyone has an inner urge to share and care and it does not matter what inspires their passion. As for me, I am a dyed in the wool finance person still making a living in that field as a matter of necessity, but when I log into this site I am in a different world! One need not even share personal details for me to understand where they come from – topics and usage of language are dead giveaways despite many hiding their true identity for whatever reasons. Some even swear by the sites they are in while few share their unpleasant experiences – they just believed others like the majority does everywhere. Most are not business savvy to understand the intricacies of Terms of Service and I too fall in this category. I remember a bank officer telling me that there is no point in reading details as I cannot even correct a spelling error, leave alone more crucial matters; just take it or leave it! Are we not part of the digits increasingly in the whole equation, the commoners?

Rewards or none, I feel blessed. However, I want to be fairly treated like others; there should be no hidden agenda to dupe a gullible group. If there is nothing at the end of the rainbow, please be upfront. I recall one shrewd businessman showing more than passing interest in the online business model – I backed away as I know he is part of what I consider a trading mentality, hit and run, fly by night type! I wanted to be no part of his game to make a quick buck and head for the exit leaving no trace!

Borderless Humanity

Agreed Wikinut does not pay much and that is highlighted even at this site by many. However, it has strengths, most importantly, have moderators who maintain quality. Newbies are given leeway with a hope they improve along the way. One should always try to put the best foot forward; it is only a courtesy we extend to our readers and fellow contributors. I have written over 600 online articles, including here, and I have done my best with not even one unpublished. Once I start the writing I am on a roll. I try my best to avoid mistakes in grammar and to be clear in what I try to convey. English is not my mother tongue but I have a love for the languages and it is fascinating to read the different styles and expressions. We are from the same stock though beliefs differ! Nobody can yet jump out of the common human skin and anyone can share and empathize with others physical and mental pain, also the joys of life. We are more similar than different despite some trying hard to drive a wedge and let us all use the many avenues to retain and reinforce the bond that the vast majority shares that crosses physical and mental boundaries and sites like Wikinut are godsend!

Siva, I loved this article. I've taken everything to heart that you've said. I totally agree and must remember to do my best when writing and sharing articles. If I had to pick one thing I love the very most about Wikinut it is that our group of writers come from many different countries. I've learned so much from them. When I read an article I'm very careful to read each and every word so that I can comprehend what the writer is trying to tell me. I do believe that sometimes my comments are too long and I'm trying to work on that. I'm trying to shorten them. There is a wealth of information on this site. It's also such a friendly and loving site. Siva, blessings to you.

Thanks Nancy, one needs a writing site more than just for posting articles and "liking" without even a cursory glance at what is written. It is more of engaging and encouraging a fellow contributor. We take a liking for the posts of few among the many anywhere.

I love a site where few do not compromise the quality of their inputs in the name of quantity. I like to fall in that group. I have lived all my life in Asia and view the world from that perspective, but we are one with same feelings, hurts and happiness. In fact, what is right and wrong will always remain the same despite our different beliefs though some take hatred for others to override their beliefs! In fact, those who are not too much into their beliefs embrace humanity as one!

Let the basics of what makes this site unique remain and over time those can outshine whatever drawbacks there are. I too like to make my comments clear and, sometimes, they are long but none has yet complained! siva

I actually wasted over $2,000 self-publishing a book of my own writings before I found these writing sites.

Over the ten years I have been writing with them, I have since recouped all of this outlay.

They pay small amounts but it does add up the more that you write. In that time I have written more than 3000 articles on-line.

I write simply because I want my own views put out there without the judgement of my immediate family and friends.

When I talk to them about my views I am a bit of a nutter, but to my writing readers on Wikinut, well I am just another wikinut!

Thanks Siva, I enjoyed reading about your views on this subject here too.

Thanks for the frank share, Spirited. To spend own money for self-publishing books is not worth during these days when they stay on the shelves. To write over 3000 articles is no mean feat - hats off to your dedication. Yes, it happens our own will be the last to recognize our efforts. There is a saying that we tend to overlook the fragrance of flowers in our garden. In India people get recognized only after they a get a Nobel prize!

We all know what common sense is except that it is not that common! And my posts mostly revolve around this topic as I feel it is worth repeating. People have to be reminded not to kill the innocents all the time as they are led by emotions and blind fury - siva

Yes, thanks Siva, I did sell 25 books, but the rest are still in a box in my house.

Helium was a good site to write for before. They had writing contests, they on-sold your articles to magazines, paying you $5 a time if one of yours was picked. Their revenue share was far higher than Wikinut. You could make $30 a month there or more most months. It's a great shame it met such an untimely end.

Thanks again, Spirited. People recommend e-publishing but writing here looks easier - at least, one does not incur expenses!

I had checked Helium few years ago but I felt they had strict standards to be met and that could affect creativity. I feel those at YCN wanted to make it a money making business model and dragged innocent contributors along with them.

Greed should have limits as what some are after, they will never need or enjoy - assets are just liabilities in the end! They little realize the vultures circling above them before their time! siva

You are so right online writing should be started in the spare time and then see where it goes. Wikinut gives a chance for everyone to write and showcase their work. It is a site where we share thoughts and feelings through words, It is amazing how we correspond across the globe without knowing each other. Thanks to sites like Wikinuts. The payment part is really hazy in many online writing sites. Great post.

For me, Online writing will always be a source of additional income. In between. I tried to maximize my gains, but realized either I do not have the time or may be talent to make what others call as $50 in 5 days talent. Or may be, there is more hype than reality in the Online world.

On Wikinut, I am not under pressure. I do try strategies to increase earnings here too, but quality is my priority here, and in a way the low paying rate on Wikinut is a blessing as we make extra effort to put on quality stuff here.

Agreed, Ptrikha. Every dark cloud has a silver lining. I read headlines trumpeting how one can make a living from online writing but that is just a mirage. It can be only a pastime or passion though it gives us fulfillment when we have the right attitude. We should never forget that almost all acclaimed publications are freely available on the net - siva

Thanks for another beautiful share ~ Siva. Your writing is profound ~ yet simple. So I believe I can accurately say that it is simply profound. I applaud your liberal compassion for the common folk on a global scale. Yes ~ we have so much in common ~ and ~ we are all from the same stock. Many ~ though ~ insist on highlighting our differences for whatever reason. We all have the same basic need for respect, appreciation, and honor to a greater or lesser extent.

Richest blessings to you.

Thank you Helen for connecting with me in the way I perceive life in general. The fact that we are all human should override whatever differences we have and highlighted by few for their selfish ends. What has happened in history is water under the bridge. Learn from our mistakes and never repeat them and as Gandhi said - an eye for eye will make the whole world blind - siva

Wonderful share, dear Sivaji--replete with your usual recipe of wisdom and compassion! Wikinut is a blessing because of the community of high-character people involved here. It would be nice if the payment was more, but those who post only for that motivation will end up elsewhere, so that also contributes, indirectly, to the overall authenticity of authors here. Very true Rama-ji. Wikinut could well prove the adage - slow and steady wins the race! I would rather that they stay in this game than disappear like the more celebrated ones that are history now. Yes dear Siva, you have hit the nail on the head by emphasising that the money paid by Wikinuts is pittance compared to the feeling that you are sharing your innermost thoughts with people from all over the world. At the end of the day, it's a fact that people everywhere are the same, have similar beliefs and desires and overall everyone wants a better world!

Yes, that is the cardinal point I have been driving at dear Subra - people everywhere are the same, have similar feelings and yearnings, want to be left alone but look forward to society for bonding and support. Why then compromise and allow ourselves to be used as a tool by few for their selfishness and greed? Time to assert and break free to reach for higher realms - siva
