Overlooked and Undervalued

A poem about women's roles throughout United States history including and up to the present.

Silent Partners

Photographs hung in stair-step fashion
Generation upon generation –
Of sons and grandsons, promisers of progress
Delivering not what was so earnestly offered.

Conspicuously absent are portraits
Of the mothers that bore them
Nursed them, loved them
No status in that.

And what of the wives
That bore them children
Kept their kingdoms
And unremittingly loved them?

What of the mistresses
Who caressed their bodies
And their overblown egos?
Where are their likenesses?

They seek dominion
With NO opposition
Want to be challenged, though not too much - least not by women
And deliver not what was so sincerely promised.

Now we are becoming aware of injustices and men are on the back foot! Thanks for this highlight - siva
