There is a growing problem in America, the Land of the Free and the Home of the Hungry, and it is directly affecting our children. Shall we turn a blind eye?

Poverty in America

Have you ever gone to bed hungry? I have. More than once in recent weeks, and I damned well don’t like it. The dollar in America just doesn’t seem to stretch as far as it used to. It’s not that my household is poverty stricken. We’re not, but we’re fearfully close to the line. We are in that category which would be classified as among the working poor. We have a few things and an income just sufficient enough to not qualify us for assistance of any kind but also insufficient for us to really prosper. A few months ago we came within two days of being in-the-streets homeless, and that’s a scare I don’t care to relive. Somehow, God bailed us out of that one.

Understandably, poverty has been on my mind a lot lately and so I started checking some statistics. Did you know that the U.S. Census Bureau reported in November of 2012 (according to my Wikipedia sources “Poverty in the United States”) that more than 16% of our American population lived in poverty including approximately 20% of our children. These figures represented an increase from the 14.3% figure shown in the year 2009 and the highest level since 1993. I find these numbers not only astounding, but absolutely frightening.

One in five children in this country go to bed hungry. Every night. In the country once called “The Breadbasket to the World.” Have we lost our way?

Thanks for your comment, Kevin. I wish we all had more answers to this horrible problem. I do know that we all must keep our eyes and ears (and hearts) open to the possibilities.
