Privatizing Everything

Governements around the world are in a mad rush to privatize everything. Do we know who benefits? Certainly it is not us.

Privatize everything

Governments all around the world are in a mad rush to privatize everything, from the water we drink to the air we breathe, and even to our prisons. The only ones who benefit from such endeavors are the great central banks, the corporations, and those who would loot the commons of the people the world over.

Enormous pressure is being brought to bear by the power elite to privatize everything. In Greece, as part of an "austerity package" initiated by the International Monetary Fund, the people have been cast in a bind from which they will never be able to exrtricate themselves. Pensions are being lowered or eliminated, the social safety net is gone, and it's every man for himself - dog eat dog.

As Richard Raznikov points out in The Rag Blog..."There has been general agreement, as human cultures have evolved, that there are some things on the planet, such as water and air, that belong to everyone. Democratization has extended these rights to include access to natural beauty and to the oceans."

It may be that privitization is the most important issue facing us today. It is causing untold problems in Europe and America, but you won't read or see anything about it on the news. One of the worst examples of privatizing regards the operation of prisons by for-profit corporations. Corrections Corporation of America, the largest private prison operator, has notified all forty-eight states in America of its offer to take over and run their prisons for profit. It should be ovbvious to any impartial observer that a private corporation, concerned only with its bottom line, is going to cut corners and save money however it can. This means: unhealthy meals for inmates, overcrowding, dirty clothing and bedding, poorly trained guards, and a host of other nightmares. A private prison in Pennsylvania was recently caught making huge payments to two judges for sending them juvinile offenders. One girl was sent up for fourteen months for doodling in her class notebook. Thus, privatized prisons are ripe for all manner of corruption.

How well will national and state parks be run if they are privatized? Will they be closed during slow times of the year? Will there be enough policing of them? Will rangers be available for lectures and to lead hikes? Raznikov states in his blog, "Years ago, California voters approved the Coastal Initiative which protected it and secured public access; if and when that problem is broken, how long before only the wealthy can enjoy the beach?" It is already the case in several pristine areas along the east coast that only the rich have access to the beaches.

Perhaps the most egregious example of corporate greed grabbing control of the commons lies in the area of the privatizing the right of access to water. Major corporations have, by securing this right, destroyed wide swaths of agriculture in India and elsewhere, resulting in thousands of farmer suicides.

Make no mistake. It is privitization which has caused the eruption of riots all over Greece. The Greek people know that the International Monetary Fund, through the mechanism of manufactured debt, is enslaving them for generations to come. The bankers are now able to extort whatever "austerity" measures they want. These involve, among other things, lowering wages to below even a subsistence level, a reduction or complete cessation of social services for the poor and even for the middle class, and the privitization of almost everything that is now publicly owned. Spain and Italy are next on their agenda.

No wonder people are taking to the streets in droves all over the world.

Good article, Steve. Who can tell me for which issues we are pro-Government and for which issues we are anti-Government?

I've become such a cynic that I think almost all issues are anti-government these days. Thanks for commenting Ivyevelyn.
