How I wrote and published my first book of fiction
My first novel
In 2008 I published my first book. It was accepted by the first publisher whom I approached, which was good news, and it went through nearly a year of publication procedure before it was launched - first, about two months while it went out to the publisher's reader for their opinion, and then about two months of work with the publisher's own editor to prepare the text, and then the book production, cover design, and so forth.
It is an episodic novel called Zebra Crossings, Tales from the Shaman's Record, published under my full name Peter Merrington, by Jacana (Cape Town and Johannesburg).
Some of the chapters were first published as single short stories, and over time I realised that they had the potential to become a book.
At the core is a South African shaman or sangoma, traditional healer, and his apprentice. He's an eclectic healer who does all kinds of local and global practices and therapies, and the point is, ultimately, about reality and imagination, the transformational power of image and narrative.

Hi Fern, I sadly think it's already out of print, but it might be available. The second book, the sequel, The Zombie and the Moon, is available as an ebook.
