Quest for Elusive Peace and Equanimity

Our inner yearnings are clear from time immemorial though we are blinded by those that that prove fleeting leading to Pyrrhic victories at most. Peace is eminently attainable with nature and other species showing the way and history is our teacher. Let us sit together to chart our path. Our differences are our creation and exist only in our minds.

Enemy is within

Our world is in daily turmoil though nature finds balance despite the many forces at play. It is ever alive to the needs of the living to survive every moment. Most importantly it provides our very sustenance – the air we breathe – without which our planet will join others as dead. Another overlooked factor is the hope that drives us of better days ahead. Most of the turmoil is within the human species as others settle down faster to a contented lifestyle once their needs are met which are basic unlike for us. We have been adding to our list – sort of needs are getting more and more. During earlier times, they were just food and shelter. Having a mind of our own we prove insatiable. They range from the vary basics to luxuries and even those that can spell our doom, and destroy us. Never mind our enemies are only us but few set the agenda for dominating the vast majority. Country borders, even beliefs, are artificial as the good and the evil are everywhere. Sadly, the good is forced to take on those of similar ilk due to the machinations of few out to wreak havoc. Though we have umpteen resources and lessons from history our quest for peace and equanimity remain elusive.

Base Instincts prevail

Individually we can reach out or mind our own business – it is our choice how we want to live. Some are ambitious to make a mark while most are contented to lead a lifestyle to meet their basic needs. When we follow our passion and are prepared to accept the fruits of our endeavors we have prepared a firm foundation for inner peace and equanimity. We can sort of ring fence ourselves to a life of contentment despite leading an active life. The choices are as many as our inner passion! The world is increasingly an oyster and country borders are not cast in iron in terms of welcoming those who can contribute, lend value. The political systems are also quite flexible now with even communist countries producing billionaires by the dozen! Despite our progress and information at the press of the button peace remains elusive. In fact, we have not progressed from our earlier days when killings were common within even close-knit families.

Turn in Consciousness needed

Our quest for peace should not be like yearning for perfect weather. The quote attributed to Mark Twain resonates “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” Then it sounds like our thirst for peace looks to be in the same boat as the weather! The vital difference is with the right attitude and give and take we can overcome the frivolous man-made divisions in the interest of reaping enduring peace. It boils down to our attitude. I list below those that matter.

Live and let live: Let us learn from other species and nature itself. They mind their own business; keep a distance from others, to avoid friction. They cooperate yet lead separate lives. They don’t seem to look for trouble like we do. Nature has been benevolent and we can live within own societies to survive. To get to know another is a pleasure but interference becomes a thorn in any relationship. Coexistence and agreeing to disagree should be the accepted norm, be they be beliefs, cultural sensitivity etc. Why should we judge others as all are like us in terms of feelings, emotions? We react to circumstances.

Let sleeping dogs lie: Our history is full of injustices all the time. The wounds prove tough to heal and keep festering. Why not forget the past injustices with a take – let the dead bury their dead! They will deal with it in another realm as belief in ultimate justice is inbuilt in our beliefs. We cannot go back in time. And endless duels to even the scores will only lead to what Gandhi said – “an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind”!

Future matters more than past: Our agenda for future should be based on the premise of oneness of creation strengthened by the uniqueness in each of us. Why hate another when they are just like us; hatred goes only to punish all. It is a burden that we should live without. When we gaze ahead the past is more to remember those we should not repeat than in getting even all the time. In fact, that is the only way forward with the march of science and technology.

Towards Oneness

Peace and equanimity is our eternal quest but it is not going to happen when we work at cross purposes. The change has to come from within us and as Gandhi said “be the change that you wish to see in the world”. Each can do but little, but if each does that little, all will be done. Agreed, we have become cynical as despite democracy and freedom that we enjoy, our agenda is dictated by few – a classic case of a slip between the cup and the lip! The reason for the slip is elementary – our refusal to heed the lessons of history and that means we never learn unlike other species that adapt and do not repeat their mistakes! Our quest for peace and equanimity has remained elusive due to our attitude despite the clear writing on the wall. Why waste another day when we know nothing matters in the final moments than the realization of what we gave to society at large and that includes those that gave us unstinting support and company. Our friends and enemies are everywhere and only our actions will win over those that doubt our integrity. Time we did what is right than follow the beaten path that leads us to our ruin and the irony is we know that! Let us for a change enjoy the breath of fresh air of oneness through cooperation and make fairy tales come alive!

Thank you Siva for another well thought out post. I wish that those in posits of power thought as you do. I am hopeful however that some things are starting to change. The next few years will probably decide as to whether we will birth a new human or send mankind back to the stone age. Blessings.

Yes Christopher we have no time to waste. We have enjoyed democracy and freedom (free for all - some take them to be!).

It is time to get cracking now with the past as guidance. I recall Einstein again “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. - siva

I don't agree with it your article, but it was articulate and well written and deserving of that star, Siva! I just believe that if we continue to put off until tomorrow what we should be doing today, we're going to go down the road of many "EXTINCT" societies. Who was it that fiddled while Rome burned? Well....America is burning. Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Thanks Susan. The thrust of my article was to remember the lessons from history, sow the seeds of what we want to reap, stop taking the beaten path that is putting us at loggerheads. We are now bogged down by a cantankerous past to such an extent we overlook the common journey.

We have no time to lose as we are on the threshold of a dynamic and challenging future but it is up to us to find the right key, right attitude.

Well, we have learned the lessons from history; united we stand, divided we fall - is the very basic of basics! siva

Thanks Deepa, so happy to receive your comments again. Some people become cynical to join the bandwagon of negativity;we should win them over that all is not lost.

Yes the change has to come from us and then spread like a wildfire when others see it and get enamored of it! We know some who spread cheer around them; the secret is their thinking and action are in harmony with nature - helping others along

Pranic healing, Mindfulness, spread positive energy that is much needed for peace, tranquility and equanimity - siva

Thanks again Deepa. Sadly, ego has been our enemy all along. Our real contribution is only how we are useful to others but many get carried away by trying to get even in a negative way.

The ego and selfishness of political leaders get translated into their actions leaving a pall of gloom and destruction over humanity. This cycle has to be broken for democracy and freedom to have meaning - siva

WOW ~ Thanks for sharing another great post ~ Siva. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
As you so profoundly ~ yet simply stated ~ "Our world is in daily turmoil though nature finds balance despite the many forces at play. It is ever alive to the needs of the living to survive every moment. Most importantly it provides our very sustenance – the air we breathe – without which our planet will join others as dead. Another overlooked factor is the hope that drives us of better days ahead."

Too many seemingly aren't willing to wait for better days ahead. They tend to operate on the premise: 'gotta have it ~ gotta have right now' ~
unfortunately causing enormous problems for themselves and others.
You also wrote: "When we follow our passion and are prepared to accept the fruits of our endeavors we have prepared a firm foundation for inner peace. . . " YES. I am so thankful to have that peace ~ which is freely provided by our Creator through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Blessings to you.

Thanks Helen for the compliments and adding value to my post.

Mother Nature is ever forgiving, works 24/7. If we don't have the air that nature provides without fail every moment we are history! It is for free and that should make us pause and ponder - how can we repay for such benevolence? In our petty minds we are forever obsessed with mine, yours, etc!

Our hopes are the guidance for action but we stay rooted to our past in a negative way. Without sowing seeds there will be no harvest! And we know the right seeds to sow but we play into the hands of few to use the cutting edge of progress for destruction. Today's headline screams Russian plane crashes in Egypt with no survivors and a group proudly claims - we did it!

When in doubt pause - what is my intention! If it benefits society then any reverses, setbacks, are a walk in the park! siva

Siva, thank you so much for writing such a wonderful article. I believe we all have it in ourselves to change the world and make it a better place. I believe there's knowledge to be learned from opening up to peace and goodwill. When we have self-centered people we have a world that cannot be sustained by greed. We must all center in on love, kindness, knowledge and most of all peace.

Thanks Nancy for your generous words of support.

Peace is inbuilt in our minds; also the awareness of the consequences of our actions, the path we choose to take.

We have burned our fingers all through history - let us change course now as we have accumulated enough material to burn down the planet to make it inhospitable for others too!

If our intentions are towards common good then the pieces will fall in place - siva

Nice sentiments, nicely expressed here, siva.

“Peace is eminently attainable with nature and other species showing the way.”

This of course must be matched against your other observation, “nature finds balance.”

Most other species live cutthroat existences too, one pitted against another.

The greater meaning of peace I feel lies in this balance you are talking about here.

We perhaps ( i.e. us humans) have lost our balance, or are trying to change our previously created balanced position within nature to match our own greed, and wants. In trying to be masters of nature, we lose contact with that which we are a part of, I think.

While I think it is true that most of nature lives a cut-throat existence, in nature, other than humanity, it is typically, solely for survival. Man is the only creature who routinely kills for greed and not to eat, be that physical or metaphorical killing.

Thanks for adding to this discussion. I will be following you.

Agreed Elliott - other species look for survival, satiating hunger and self- defense. Even the prey knows when the predator is hungry.

But we are more led by ego, politics, power, self-aggrandizement. So we are condemned to a life of discontent and strife. We are progressing scientifically, no doubt, but live in a cesspool of our creation - siva

Thank you Spirited for your encouragement and input.

The lessons from Mother Nature are many; the most basic is coexistence. We share its resources starting from the the air we breathe for survival. That is the ultimate equalizer - the richest and the poorest, the newborn and the one taking the last breath sharing from the same source!

Other species act on instinct to satiate hunger and then just take it easy. I recall reading - a lion chasing its prey but the latter managed to escape. We feel for the "underdog" and happy for it getting a second chance to live. Then we reach out to eat meat or fish!

Yes, we kill not to survive but for greed, ego and then put the blame on our beliefs, god - siva

Thanks Elliott - I too hope to see some breakthrough before my time is up here though I do believe we can influence creation, nudge it to a better path after we are done here!

Our beliefs too have played havoc in our thinking and action. We are too narrow minded, gullible in our thinking and action. We are ready to kill another to appease unseen Gods though we share nature and even the very basic of basics, the air we breathe!

Time we adhered to common sense - live and let live. Nature provides for free but our ego and greed lead us to our doom - siva

Thanks dear Stella for your visit and my post was incomplete without your take.

We may need higher intervention and the sooner the better as the evil is getting stronger in terms of weapons of mass destruction. Now they possess guns and more powerful of them by the day. They claim they shot down the Russian plane but authorities think they may not yet have the weapons for it, and by implication that they will do it if they have them! By corollary, if they possess nuclear weapons they will go all the way as their fingers are itchy!

The good has to raise their voice and carry the day; the point of no return to act is now. In the long run we are all dead anyway; now we are carrying the baton that has been passed on to us with deep faith; let us live up to the trust placed on us - siva
