My dad passed away in November 2007. I miss him greatly still. The poem was written shortlly after his long agonising death but recently I have re written some of it and composed it as a song which is being recorded with me playing and singing.

Quietly Dad

Quietly Dad 14/01/1929- 28/11/2007 Dedicated to my wonderful Dad.

How do I remember you? I heard my family say.
Well, dad, you were the quiet type, Until your dying day.

The twenty eighth of November, Two thousand and seven the year,
For two years you suffered quietly, Fighting through your fear.

They said at first it was cancer, so we all gathered around
But you fought onwards quietly, with very little sound.

Two weeks on, you proved them wrong, still things were the same.
Struggling quietly, losing weight- but home is where you came.

They didn’t/couldn’t diagnose you, You were always in and out-
Of hospital, where you’d lay quietly- inwards wanting to shout.

Your poorly heart and lungs gave up, along came the C-Dif bug
That germ that took you quietly, I’m glad we had that final hug.

I remember some things as a little girl, like when you came home- that smell,
The paint you worked with all day long, Quietly providing and keeping us well.

You’d have your dinner, served at once, and turn the T.V on
You’d sit whilst I combed and combed, your brylcreamed hair just shone.

I was a bit like you dear Dad, a quiet girl and very shy
Didn’t mix much, seldom went out, sitting alone, I’d sometimes cry.
Ice skating and music lessons is where I went, when you would drive the car
Quietly you’d wait outside the house, for me- it was too far.

We only just missed you dying Dad. You quietly went alone
At least your body was still warm, and not as cold as stone.

Last words

Well Dad, I can’t say much more, except I miss you very much
I’ll continue to visit your lovely tree, where we can keep in touch.
